Scary Sound. Almost like a tapping sound.

Okay, you know how when you are trying to drive your truck and you are going from neutral to first from a stop? Well this noise happens if you let the engine rpms drop too low and then add a lot of gas and release the clutch pedal accordingly. Doing this seems to cause a loud tapping or slapping sound.

On the one hand I avoid burning the clutch out his way, but on the other, maybe I am putting too much stress on the engine. Does anyone know what this sound means? And is it okay that it I've heard it a few times?

So you are asking about the same sound that would occur if you were to put it in 3rd gear going 10MPH and giving it some gas. Right?

In other words, lugging the crap out of engine.

From a normal start in first gear (from a stop) there should be no pre-ignition.

If you lug the engine really bad under excessive load, you will get pinging/knock (pre-ignition).

I would try not to duplicate this sound if possible. There is no reason to lug it that bad out of first gear. You are not truly saving the clutch by doing that.

A properly driven 5 speed with the stock clutch will last 150K miles or more.

i thought that the less the rpms go up while the clutch pedal is pressed, the better.

Yeah, but we are talking about a fine line here. In other words, perfect rev matching will result in zero ping, and a smooth non-clutch burning start.

Would you rather replace the engine or the clutch?
