Does my 22re sound like its knocking?

I have never heard an engine with a knock before, so obviously I don't know exactly what it sounds like. My '88 22re has been making a sound that seems to be a deeper tone than valve ticking (my '93 22re ticked a lot) and it is coming from the engine area, around #2 and #3 pistons, sort of towards the top it seems. I can't remember if the sound was present before or after I replaced my thermostat, but I had put a new thermo in, a 195*, hoping it would help make the air warmer inside. I did 2 trips of about 110 miles round trip, two days in a row right after I replaced it. Of course, the engine temperature rose significantly before the thermo would open, twice it reached the line just before the red zone. Also, on Friday night, I did some light snow wheeling with some friends. I almost got stuck on a hill (only because I was behind my friends F-150). I ended up revving it pretty high trying to get up the hill in 4-lo before backing down and trying a new approach. I made it up, but still revved it pretty high. ( no idea how high as I don't have a tach). Why I mention this? Well, perhaps overheating and over revving might cause a knock to develop. I'm just worried it is a knock. Heres a sound clip. Its not very great because the wind was blowing and messed up the sound a little.

Try loosening the valve cover so that you're barely compressing the rubber grommets. It does sound a bit like its knocking doesn't it.

The nuts on the vc are pretty loose. Hell, when I first went to check the runner out, one of them had fallen off (luckily it got caught on some of the vacuum hoses) and ya it kinda does sound a little knocky...
It also has a leak between the exhaust manifold and down pipe..... but the "knocking" sound is more prevalent towards the engine than by listening through the wheel well...

Can you tell for sure whether it's from the head or the block? Maybe listen with a stethoscope.

That's a rod knock for sure. Mine sounded a little like that but only right after you would shift. Changed my rod bearings and all is good now, but from the sounds of things you need to pull the crank and have it machined.

well, if you've got the time, drop the oil pan and see if things have some play; you'd more than likely be able to wiggle the connecting rod on the crank it's it's gotten to the point of an audible knock. first though, drain some of the oil through a coffe strainer and see if you can get some metal shavings in it... tell-tale sign of main bearing wear...

Got a suggestion;

Before you start tearing it down, could that possibly be the exhaust? Yes, the exhaust. Mine sounded pretty darn close to that (don't get your hopes up though!) when my egr line on the back of the head was NOT connected to the intake.

Good luck, I hope you get it all figured out!

If I had the money and tools, knowledge can always be gained

Hm...So almost overheating could cause this or not?

It has 5w-30 synthetic oil in it, not leaking at all.

Maybe something is clogging some oil port or whatever and starved one or more of the rod bearings from oil?

LoL I know your pain I just changed out my motor for kinda the same thing the #4 rod end was loose on my old motor..
It's because I had a leaking head gasket and things got hot. It makes bearings go really fast.
When you over heat best thing to do is shut it off right then and there. Don't continue to run it you end up ruining your bearings,
Mine sounded sorta like that only when I had the motor under load at certain rpms and it was also noisy too because the timing chain was worn as well as the guides.

I can't veiw the video but ya she got up there in heat it shouldn't heat past half way mark really!! plus u said your running 5w30 synthetic I would never go under 10w30 in these engines !! try 10w30 I run 15w40 with lucas it made oil press better and made it a little quieter! try it before u rebuild! plus the guys at toyota said that it won't blow up like that anyways!
