How bad of a job-replacing rear pinion bearing?

Started getting some clunk in the rear driveline, thought it was u-joints but after some inspection there is some play in the rear pinion. Dangit. Anyways, just want some insight on how bad of a job this is? Haven't done a Toy 3rd before.

It's not toooooo bad, granted you have a press to remove/install the new races.

Other then that, it's just a matter of the normal setup on the gears.. which happens to be pretty simple with the way Toyota has things set up. (adjustments, that is)

Oh, and make sure you know what kit you are getting. The 4 and 6 cylinder differentials have different pinion bearings..

Hmmm...after doing some reading I can see I have the capabilities in the shop to do it. However I'm looking at it from a time/money perspective and not knowing the condition of the gears or side bearings that's got me thinking I'd be better off looking for another 3rd. Running stock 4.10 gears, wouldn't be a bad idea to goto 4.56.

Good thinkin'. If you lost the pinion bearing preload, you've likely done SOME damage to the gears if you've driven much. While taking out the third is not too bad, if you're going to take the 3rd apart, you may as well replace everthing while you're in there! (Including lockers if you 'wheel)

Already ordered axle seals, some brake components, u-joints...figure I'll make a day of it.

The only thing I'm debating is switching from 4.10 to 4.56. It's my daily driver and in the winter I run stock size snow/ice tires so 4.10 is fine. But in the summer I throw on 31's and it does lose some performance. Obviously I have the cost of the front as well so that almost doubles the price...

think I'll stick with 4.10.

I'd do the swap to the higher gears. I'd rather have a light pedal and rev a little higher to keep speed than have to squash it to keep speed at lower rpms.

I agree, better gas mileage.

I have 31's with 4.10's. gotta mash it on the freeway more than I like didnt before the 31's. Gotten used to it and gas is still around 20mpg or more on average depending on conditions, where im going etc etc

ill be doing 33's and 5.29's this spring tho.

I think you'd like the 4.56's a lot.
