Home made long travel?

I will definitly bring stuff to Pismo. MCR? Well, I chickened out driving my Fordota on the trail and rode shotgun in Don's rock buggy. Plus if I broke something I would be stranded up north. My truck is too nice to destroy on the Rubicon. I don't have big enough tires, low enough gears in the diffs (although locked) or low gears in the transfer case. Also the T-5 tranny that came with the Motor swap is weak and the clutch slips. Its a desert truck not a rock buggy. I know excuses! Fortunatly, I do have a customer that ran the Rubicon with my kit earlier this summer, he is sending pics. I will upload ASAP.

Nate, i think your kit looks sick!
It's hard to argue against it's sturdiness if 100% of all the people who actually have a kit havn't experienced failures.
But building your own long travel set up isn't impossible, it will just takes lots of money, time and patience.

not lots of money, i am currently building my own setup, but im ditchen the whole front diff for 2wd in a 90 4runner. hiems and uniballs will replace all of the toyota tierod ends, ball joints and bushings.

"Home made long travel" is what should be discussed in this forum thread. My stuff started as home made but progressed, so I can relate.
Ditching the front diff and CVs will give you a lot more freedom. Using hiems will be strong and with various missalignment spacers and careful planning more range. Depending on how wide you go (say around 3-4" per side so it stays relatively street legal) you should be able to get 13-14" of travel. I found that a frame section of the front end is helpful and you won't destroy your truck with modifications and mistakes. Plus you can still drive your truck till you get your design finalized.
Keep posting progress pics and reports. Have fun with it, if it becomes a burden walk away, its not worth the stress.

im thinkin...BL LT Kit...and some 63" chevies are my cup of tea boys....
yep..i'm doin it..FOR SURE..
now i just gotta come up with the dang'd ole $$$$$$![stir](https://www.yotatech.com/forums/images/smilies/stir.gif)
heck i can get the CV's from a junkyard t-100.(low mileage and NOT dry rotted of course..) but i guess it would cost close to the same to get em from the parts store with a lifetime warranty..
but dang $775+ for a UCA bracket, new LCA's, braided brake lines, and hardware...thats alot..LOL..plus say $80 a piece for the CV's..lol...o yea and the tie rod sleeves come with it..so we're at about $1000 even for the BL kit vs. $5000+ for the TC kit..

Sounds like a warning to me! I visited the website, some funny stuff! Experimentation is a good thing, why do some get off on being a hater? Who are they to judge? You guys ever see the Movie The Fastest Indian starring Anthony Hopkins? I saw some creative solutions on scary steering that might be ok (in that certain context) and who knows maybe it was only a temporary solution or for mock up when someone walked by and snapped a photo. I've observed a few failures in the desert and on the trail of tried and true "non-scary" ideas that experts swear by that have been broken. I didn't laugh or ridicule these stranded 4x4 enthusiast as I buzzed up in my low buck long travel. I made sure everthing was ok and gave a helping hand if needed. Its all relative, bring what you got, wheel on it till it breaks, make it stonger and move on. Some stupid ideas end up being the best ones.
