Hissing/leaking sound when engine under load
Ive started to notice a wierd, maybe hissy/"sounds like air or liquid leaking from a small hole somewhere" type sound coming from the engine, seems like its behind the Steering wheel.
It only happens when the car is under load (ie accelerating when in gear). If i take it out of gear and and rev the engine, the sound is not there.
It happens in all gears from what I can tell, cant really hear it in 1st, maybe because the load is not enough to cause the sound.
I thought it might be coming from the gearbox but when I put my ear down near the gearstick it definetly sounds like its coming from in behind the steering wheel.
Again, if I put my head down to the left of the steering wheel and listen it sounds like its coming from over to the right somewhere, behind the steering wheel.
Maybe its a hole in the exhaust or something?
I just had the HG done, maybe thats effed up again?
Any thoughts or ideas?

What symptoms would I see/feel for a plugged cat?
No noticable loss of power. Maybe a little bit come to think of it, but I havnt really been driving it hard since I noticed this sound. Waiting til I get someone to take a look at it.
No funky smells from the exhaust. Your talking about the HG smells? No nothing like that.....yet.
Come to think of it, it does and has had a fairly strong fuel smell ever since the HG was done. Seemed to mostly occur when the heater was turned on and when using "fresh air". Though it could still be smelt when the cold air was switched on, but not with recycled cabin air.
Had it checked out, mechanics couldnt find any noticable leaks and put it down to burning off of lubricants they used to loosen nuts etc, when they replaced the HG. Its been a few months now, you would think they would have all burnt off by now.

haha
my 88 3vze runner would make "hissing" noises but i think that had to do with the speedometer cable because, the needle would bounce around in unison to the noise.
