I have a '94 22RE that is having a high RPM issue. The truck is running great, but when you accelerate hard the throttle or something holds the truck at that RPM and you have to shut the truck down to get it back to idle. I have checked the throttle cable and return spring, both look in good working condition. This problem has caused the engine to go near redline a couple times and I would like to get it repaired, but don't know what to try. Could it possibly be the TPS?

 

Sure your throttle is not sticking in anyway? When it gets stuck at high rpms get out and see if the throttle is stuck. Try a simple cleaning of the throttle plate. Possible vac leak?

 

Pull the intake hose off and inspect the butterfly valve.

It is possible there is gunk in there and its causing the valve to get stuck open.


When the motor gets stuck in high rpms, does the throttle get stuck down??

 

I just tried it again and as soon as the truck gets around 2500 rpm its reving up and won't stop. I shut it down and visually checked the throttle cable and it was shut and against the dampner. It idles great and no visual problems with the vaccum lines. I will inspect the butterfly soon. Does anyone know if the TPS can cause these symtoms? Any other ideas?

 

I believe, could be wrong, but I think the only way for this to happen is the butterfly is getting stuck open. I have had to clean mine before and my truck only has 117k on it....like the others said, without shutting the truck off, pop the hood and look at the butterfly....

 

Can you get the truck to do it while parked in the driveway?
If so, get someone inside the truck to start and rev the engine while you look at what's going on. You may find that the accelerator is closing, but too slowly, and by the time you come to a stop it's already closed.

 

I have tried many times to get it to do it sitting in the driveway with no success. I took the truck on another drive today and as long as RPM doesn't get much over 2K everything is fine. I have read a couple other threads that lead me to believe that it has to be the butterfly valve sticking. Because even if the TPS is telling the ECU it needs fuel without air it won't run off. Is this true? I am really tring to rule out the TPS. If anyone has any input on the TPS and if its failure could cause this I would really appreciate it. Could the dashpot cause this problem? It looks to be working fine while I am under the hood, but who knows!!!!
