high idle and tap tap tap.....boom?

just got the runner running and it sounds like poopoo.



also idles has after warm.... maybe because of headers?

does that sound like i need to reshim the valves? or does that just sound like fuel injectors?

Mine was doing that when I first got it...then I hydro-locked it. I believe it's your valves making this noise. Seems like it in mine, when i locked it she really started ticking. Now it's not rapping like a rod bearing, I have a parts truck that does that. This seems more like a valve sticking, I have not had a chance to tear into her yet.

hey I have the same clicking noise...can it be the injectors or valves?

that sounds like youre due for a valve adjustment, thats more than just the normal tick for either valves of injectors

how bad is it for the engine if you dont get the valve adjustment it right away.....my local dealer want $500 to adjust the valve but dont have the money right now.

almost all my valves were tighter than spec... so im hoping that's what the noise was from! just waiting on the valve adjustment tool to get here(ups is slow BTW). nor cal if you let the ticking go u may have a chance at burning a valve, that's the reason i had to get a head job...sucks and is way expensive!! i couldnt imagine what a shop would charge in labor to pull your heads!

Well I ran the 4runner for less that a day and blown the head gasket againg....I am selling, ig I don't sell it then I going to rebuilt the whole engine.

A $10 set of feeler gauges, a 12mm wrench, and a flathead screwdriver are all that are needed to adjust valves. You can do it yourself in about 30 minutes. It's quite easy.

so i finally got the valve tool in on monday night so ive been working on it today. i was able to change around shims and get all but 2 valves within spec! on the passenger side all the exhaust valves were too tight and the intakes were too loose and only 2 were outta spec on teh driver side. crazzzzy! i couldnt even get a .002in feeler in most of the tight ones! so running to the stealer again tomorrow....i pray they have these in stock!

for first timmers ummmm maybe more like 3 hrs(i would include myself in that category lol)... lots of measuring writing numbers and micrometering!!!! and i believe it could be done without the valve tool but its just soo much easier with it!

hey osamabinkeifen, where are the pics to show us how to adjust the valves...or at least to show us how you did it...does anyone knows if there is a tread showing how to adjust the valves?

If there's no exhaust leaks, and you're not tossing any engine codes, valves would be the thing to check.

These are shimmed bucket valves, have fun adjusting em

dang that would have been awesome... u wouldnt havppen to have any 2.55mm shims lying around??? i need 2 and ill be finished!
