High idle and gas pedal
Ok, I did a search and looked through about 13 pages of results regarding gas pedals. My problem might be a little different so let me know if I am correct of you guys still think it is the throttle body. My truck (89 4wd Long Bed, 5spd V6 DX, with about 191K miles on it) seems to idle high at stops, stop lights or whenever I have my foot off the gas. I can get the idle back down if I put the front of my foot under the pedal and push the pedal up. I took a quick look under the pedal and lubed the spring with silicone spray and nothing changed. A couple times when I first started the truck, might have happened because I did not pushed the pedal back up, RPM went up higher than idle and you could hear the engine. Also when I push the pedal down and release it there is a slick click I can feel and barely hear, when I release the gas pedal. So is the problem the spring (behind the gas pedal) that pushes the gas pedal back up to the idle position, or is it the throttle body sticking (if it is the TB I will attempt to clean it using the write up posted)?

Elton, I adjusted the slack on the cable about 3-4 months ago because the truck was idling high. Adjusting the slack helped the idle alot, I believe it let the allowed the truck's throttle to return to the normal idle position.

Take the cable off the throttle body and start the truck. Rev it up by hand and see if it goes back to normal idle. If not then your throttle body is the problem. If it goes back to normal then it is your cable. :pat:

you may also want to check the dashpot (the little spring like thing on the throttle body). Check to make sure it is not adjusted to high or sticking. I had a similar problem but not exactly the same and that fixed it. For me giving it some gas would cause the throttle to stick high when it was in neutral or had the clutch pushed in. As you can imagine revving to 3000 in first pushing in the clutch, having the motor stay at 3000 and putting it in second made for a rough ride.

Thanks Flash319 and squishy321 (also Elton)- was about to do what you both suggested then just looked at the cable right behind the pedal. It was the black plastic housing the surronding the cable that had come apart and was not allowing the pedal to return to normal idling position and also making the clicking sound. I removed the broken piece, silicone lubed all the moving parts on the pedal for good measure and checked the throttle body to see if there was any gunk and the effectiveness of the spring. Everything is working fine now. Thanks everyone for all your help, saved me some $ again, I love this message board.
