Hiding the gas tank on 89 runner
Has anyone here ever raised their gas tank to hide it out of the way on a first gen runner? I didnt even know this was possible untill I saw one on ebay that the owner said it had been done. That would look way better than it does now. Any info would be great.

Here's a site where they lifted the gas tank up 2". It looks like you just need a cut off saw and a welder. I might need to try this some time.

I wonder if it could go higher with a body lift?

Roger already has a 3" body lift to allow this to occur:
"My drivetrain lift had to take into account a number of factors. I already had a 1" body lift and had "things" set up for that. The radiator had been dropped 1", the transfer case shift levers had been raised 1" with custom short throw shift linkages and I was also wanting to increase clearance between the transfer case and rear driveshaft, so I opted for a custom 3" body lift of my own design, and a 2" drivetrain lift. This would essentially leave me at the same body-drivetrain spacing I had before and give me an extra inch or so at the rear driveshaft. Since 3" is about the maximum body lift you can safely do, that set the upper bounds of the lift. I worked my way down from there"

BE VERY SURE that you get, or modify the cell so that it will house the FACTORY toyota fuel sending unit, and gas guage, along with the FACTORY fuel pump and return lines.
Aftermarket stuff blows balls when hooked up to the toy junk. Buy the cell, then modify to fit the factory stuff. You will thank me when your truck isn't dead on the side of the road from fuel starvation or vaporlock.
Plus, hooking it up is easy, and everything works factory!
As for rasing the tank, body lift or relocation are your only options. That damn tank has no where to go in stock form.

So has anyone done anything with this? I hate the way my tanks hangs under. It's so "out there" for getting banged up. I have a 1" BL on my truck. I'll have to do some more research. Is it easier to to move it to where the spare goes?

i dont got any pics, but on the 4crawler website theres an article on moving the tank to where the spare tire is. ive done it and built a cage to guard the tank where it is. its up way above the rear diff now as well. have a 3" body lift mind you on the 4runner.
basically you need to cut out the crossmember the tire goes to, put in two in its place for the guard and for replacement strength, install a couple rails to bolt the tank to. on the stock tank youll need to shave a 1/4 off each side of the tank, turn it sideways and put it back up. Utilizes stock everything just need to extend the rubber gas lines and figure out how the filler gets attached, which was the bigger pain but painless in itself. all in all was a simple upgrade and my tank is now safe.

lifting the gas tank on a 2nd gen is possible, 2" b/l allows you to r & r the tank to the top of its current location. there are several links to installing long range tanks where the spare is located. search is your friend.

I want to put a fuel cell or really any tank that works under the trunk area of my runner in place of where the current spare tire is. Having the fuel tank the lowest point of the vehicle makes me vomit in my mouth a little when I think about it. I'm eyeballing the swing-out tire carrier retrofit for my 94, so when the underside is freed up, I would most certainly want to put a fuel tank under there. I'm also eventually planning a 2" body lift, so I may do that sooner rather than later if it helps the tank install. Has anyone done that or seen it done without being a hacked up exo-framed trail rig? I don't want to have to refuel every 150 miles either, I have to drive back across the entire country again this year.

Someone asked about 2nd gen...
Yes, you can move the gas tank to the location of the factory spare tired.
I do have 2" BL though and you must make sure you don't pinch the nipples with the body cross member.
You can find the rest of the pics here...
