Good advice for replacing the cat, I'll have to keep that in mind as mine is crushed.

This however, needs addressing. It may restrict what miniscule power gains you will see.

To be clear- EXHAUST DOES NOTHING ON A N-A MOTOR!!!!!!!!!!!

You have a gutless toyota truck. Strapping on an exhaust will NOT make it a race car. You will go from like 100 hp to 105 hp. Wow. I did it all, CAI, ceramic coated headers, hi flow 2.25 exhaust, muffler, blah blah. zip. zero. nada.

You want bolt on power? Buy a supercharger.

Exhaust will make it sound cool, it won't do dick for making the truck go faster.

Buy it if you must, but I'd put that money into a new cam/rockers/injectors. Or lockers. Or tires. Or just about anything but exhaust.
Haha yeah, the 22re isn't much of a powerhouse. I think I should voice my goal in this whole exhaust matter. My goal for my engine is maximum efficiency. I recently had to replace my HG so I thought I'd just go ahead and replace the head with a Street RV head with a 268 cam. While I've noticed some performance gains, I simply would like the enjoyment of fulfilling my truck's potential. I figured letting the truck breathe a little better would help. I didn't want to throw money at new headers if I would still be restricted by my old cat.

New question: my muffler is relatively new. If I upgrade my exhaust to 2.25in, is there anyway of connecting the new exhaust to my old one? Is it even worth it?

yea fred, i know just bein' a punk-nugget...
agree with the folks advocating more beneficial mods; tires, suspension, lockers, duals, ramStr, SECURITY???, recovery....etc
imo....exhaust is part of a complete breathing upgrade from intake all the way to the muff, including air filter, throttle body, headers, cat and wise work of the routing.

Another question which coincides with my previous question :

If I wanna upgrade to the LCE header with the 2.25in exhaust, doesn't that pretty much mean I have to buy a new cat with a new muffler?

The outlet of the LC header is 2" and the downpipe connects right up to the flange on the stock cat, so you can pretty much leave that as-is. I did that on my '85, and I just put an adapter to bump the outlet pipe behind the cat to the size of the rest of the exhaust:
