Help with trans and diff fluid change

Alright guys, I have to do the trans fluid and filter, and was reading up on it but I don't seem to get it, or i'm just stupid.
Anyway it's on my 94' runner 4wd with the A340H as Snap-On kinda verified.
I have no trouble removing the large main pan and doing the filter, but if I drain the transfer case right behind it, which has it's own drain plug.
Will the transfer case refill when I fill through the dipstick?
Second question.
Then theres the chain case. It seems the book calls for dextron in it also?
Is that right? It must be seperate from the transfer case then, and not sharing fluid?
Then I want to change both differential fluids. Do you guys put that additive in your diff's?

Your transmission has 2 drain plugs, the main one on the bottom and another just behind it. You have to remove both and then refill through the dipstick. The transfer case has seperate drain and refill plugs, both facing towards the rear of the vehicle. They're the big ones, about a 23 or 24 mm head. Remove the fill plug first, you don't want to find you can't get it out after it's empty. This goes for the diffs too.
As for diff additive if you're talking about limited slip stuff you don't need it.

From what I understand teh transfer case is filled when the tranny is filled through the dipstick. THey just drain seperatly.

So the chain case is a seperate cavity, yet it also takes dextron like the trans and transfer case?

Do you have a Haynes manual? I think it outlines routine maintenance stuff pretty well.

fluids change - laugh at my expense

Well I changed the trans, transfer and dhain case fluids.
The chain case fluid looked like new, nice and clean, but I was there and did it anyway. I was doing great on the trans fluid change until i removed the pan from under the truck b4 i removed the filter. Many classic bad words were uttered (and possibly some new ones created) as I removed the filter and found there was still about a 1/2 quart of oil on top of it poised to attack me as I took the filter down. :pat:
It ran down my arm, into my armpit, some managed to hit the ground and splash back up into my eye and right ear.
Plus it was like 95 degrees out and humid as hell.
Anyway the trans fluid and filter improved my hard shifting problem. The truck would almost give ya wiplash as it shifted before but now it's nice and smooth.
Thanks for all the help everyone!

There was one guy the other day that reported his did, but just to be on the safe side I would fill it seperately through the t-case fill hole.

Hey Scrid. When you removed the filter was it dirty?

Just curious.

When i put my A340H back in i had the same question (infact youll find it if you search hard enough)

i ended up filling my transfercase with ATF with the fill plug, but i have also verified that the tranney can and does move fluid to the transfer case.

I Recently got around to remouting my xcase cooler (relcoated because of headers) and had about 1/2 quart drain out.

I check the fluid level the next day (dipstick) and i was about 1/2 quart low

Interesting! I would have guessed the xfer cooler and lines would hold almost a quart on their own.
