yeah, sits at idle slowly goes up to about 1300 then drops back to 500ish and starts up again. if i tap the gas it levels for a minute around 900 then slowly climbs again. turned the idle down but still does it.....

Idle surge can be caused by a bad sensor. The best way to start out trying to figure it out is by checking your codes.
If no codes,
The main cause of idle surge that "I personally" have come across especially on the 89-95 22RE is the idle screw being dirty, it's passage being dirty, or the throttle plate being dirty.
It's fix:
on the very top left of the throttle body there is a large flat blade screw. Take it out, clean it. Then start the truck with your finger over the hole, then spray intake cleaner down the hole. This has now cleaned the screw, and the idle passage. This will allow you to properly set the idle. Put a little dab of oil on the rubber o-ring and put the screw back in. Next take off the plastic intake hose, spray a bunch of intake cleaner on a rag. Open the throttle plate and wipe everything as far back as you can.
Side note: Never just spray intake cleaner into the throttle body. The TPS is not a sealed unit. Cleaner can easily travel up the throttle shaft into the TPS. This can easily damage the Sensor.

I think we need a sticky writeup on the proper steps for idle surging. #1 should be checking TPS, #2 should be checking gaskets, #3 should be checking gaskets again, #4 should be checking the throttle body and throttle screw, #5 could be rechecking the gaskets, #6 could be checking the butterfly valve on the throttle body and #7 should be checking the IACV.

thanks to you all especially trainwreckinseattle for his advice re:the idle screw or should I say screw up. my 22re was fast idling and surging and I tried all kinds of tps, etc stuff but the idle screw did the trick. thanks again or maybe not since now I have to go back to work.
