I have a 1988 4runner that used to have the 4 spd automatic transmission, but recently swapped it with a 5 spd manual from a 1994. The speed sensor located in the rear of the transmission on the '88 has a cable attached to it. I didn't get the speed sensor for the '94 tranny, but it looks like the sensor on the '94 is a lot bigger and has an electrical plug. Is this right? If so where does that wire run to?

I guess I just want to know exactly how the speedometer cable works on the '94, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Electronic speed sensor! wires go to the ecu and another sensor in the back of the speedometer. I'm pretty sure that I had read somewhere there were transition years(early 90's) depending on the model your truck, you could have either a cable speedometer drive or an electrical speed sensor in the same model year So if you had the right year you could put the cable driven type in. Search on Yotatech and if you don't find the info here search google, I'm sure you will find the right one.

The 94 had a speed sensor the wires from it go to a speed sensor in the back of the speedometer and the ECU, but I'm pretty sure that the early 90's had a transition year where the same model could come with either a speed sensor or a cable driven speedometer.
The part #'s listed below are for your 88 auto, below that is an 88 manual, the only difference between the two is the speedometer gears which are easily changed. These parts are the same to 91. 92 has different part #'s so I suspect that 92-93 was the transition year. If you could find a cable one out of a 92 or 93 I'm sure it will drop in to your 5 spd.

Awesome! That is perfect. I'm gonna try to order the cable.

Also, I finally went for the moment of truth and tried to start it...it wouldn't turn over or even click. I have ruled out the battery and alternator, and tested the power cable going to the starter which is good. The other smaller wire and the starter wasn't getting any volts when I tried to start it. Could it be a bad starter? So far it has done the same thing every time I try something different: the dash lights turn on, headlights and everything works, but the starter won't even click...

Starter relay? Did you hook up the clutch switch?

That's another thing. I took the clutch switch off so I don't have to depress the pedal to start it. I'm going to try to put it back on and see what happens...

Well my buddy and I got it running. Hooked up a push button start, which just bypassed the whole ignition system. So now I'm just tryin to find that speedo cable...

I am having trouble finding a manual speed sensor from a 92-93 that is cable driven. All of them have an electrical plug on them.

Could I use a cluster out of a 92-93 and run the appropriate wires from the VSS to the cluster to get my speedo working?

...plug onto the back of my gauge cluster? If so, then all I would need to do is buy the electric VSS that plugs into my 94 transmission and run the wires from the back of my cluster down to the transmission to the VSS?

That screws onto the manual VSS in the transfer case.

So, what are you running, a V6 or a 4 cyl.? Are you sure an older mechanical sensor won't fit?
