What engine do you have in your 4Runner. Replacing a starter is minor. If it is a 22re the starter is right inside the front passenger side wheel well. If your looking at the motor it's on the left side at the bottom. I reccomend taking the plastic off the inside of the wheel well for easier access.

please search first

heres the one for the 3.0 https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f128/starter-replacement-2nd-gen-4runner-76358/

and for the 22re first diconect the negative battry cable jack the truck up take the passenger side wheel off then pull the splash guard off then take the 10mm bolts off the access panel then crawl underneth and take the 13mm bolt off the starter cable then if you have a little mirror take of the 14mm bolt of the back of the starter as it is hard to see or you can look from the top and line up the socket then take the bolt off the bottom of the starter wich also is a 14mm make sure you atlest have a 6'' and 10'' socket exteisons it took me around a hour to change mine

And, if it is a 22re, replace the fuel filter while you are at it. It is 10 times easier with the starter off.
Before you go and get a starter, SEARCH for threads on starter contacts. You will still have to pull the starter, but a much cheaper fix and it could be your problem.
