It is located behind the passenger side kick panel beside the glove box. It will have the exact part number you need on it for your engine/trans combo.

The only place to get it would be online, dealership or a salvage yard. Here is a good place to check once you have the part number: https://parts.lakelandtoyota.com

Why?

The ECM can be damaged, but it's usually the last on a long list. The FSM diagnostics were written for brand-new vehicles. In that case, after checking a slew of other candidates, the list would end with "replace the ECM." Once your vehicle hits, oh, 24 years, a failure in the wiring, connectors, components is much more likely.

Was it code 11? I'm not sure with the 22re, but as far as I know that doesn't mean you need a new ECU. Could be interruption of power supply to ECU, or throttle position sensor. I'll let someone more familiar with the 22re chime in.

Has the TPS been adjusted properly? That sounds like a possible cause if it tested good. Did he remove it to test? It can't be thrown back on without adjusting it properly.

Knowing what code it's throwing could help too. If you don't remember you can check yourself. Jumper TE1 and E1 in the under hood diagnostic connector, turn key to "on" without starting and count the flashes of your check engine light. Long pause between codes, each series of blinks is a code.

Here's the list of codes, and how YOU can retrieve them. http://web.archive.org/web/201410310...26diagnosi.pdf The only code for which the "only" suggested repair is "replace ECM" is 53, and I really, really doubt you have that code.

As I mentioned, each code has a list of causes, ending with "ECM" once you've eliminated all other possibilities. I don't have a lot of confidence that you've eliminated all other possibilities. In which case, replacing your ECM will not help.

First you have to verify the source... is it fuel?
Is it ignition/ fire?
then you can start the process of diagnostics and elimination of possibilities...
eliminating 1/2 of the possibilities is huge... fuel or fire?
this sounds like moisture in your distributor...
Check and see if your distributor cap has the oring to keep out moisture...
it doesn't have to be WET just moisture REALLY causes some trouble especially at idle... or low rpms... clears up when it dries out then does it again when contaminated
