Help with a mechanical problem- My truck is jerking for some reason!

I recently just bought a 1991 Toyota 4x4 with the 3.0 about 2 days ago now. I have been going through trying to find everything i need to fix. It has new wires, plugs, fuel filter, air filter, fresh oil change, distrubter, and button. I have the gaskets to fix an oil leak coming from the valve covers. So heres my problem when going down the road the truck will hesistate sorta like a jerk, it really doesnt feel like a skip caused my plugs or plug wires. It only does it a few times when driving and its not in between a speicfic gear or anything. Please help! Thanks alot!

But onto your problem. First of all, what brand of the products did you use. Second, something a little more descriptive then a few times when driving, maybe more specifically.

The guy I bought the truck from did the tune up so not real sure about the product names, and the guys not b/s ing because i bought it from my cousin. To be more specific when going down the road doesnt matter what gear the truck will jump forward or skip, but the rpms stay the same. Then it will run out just fine and then it will happen again, but its not continue the whole time driving. The truck shifts good and runs out good! The only thing i noticed yesterday is that the tranny is missing the bottom left two bolts. Could that cause a hesitation? Not a mechanic as you can tell.

Are you sure it is in the motor? Could it possibly be in shocks, suspension,U-joints. Get under there and start trying to move things around and see if there is excessive play. It is hard to tell with description. You have only had tis for 2 days, was it sitting long? Maybe a fuel issue. Water or a bad fuel pump. My 91 22re jerked occasionally before the fuel pump went out.

Sorry for the poor description! As far as i know it has not been sitting long! I will check the shocks, suspension and all that! Thanks! I greased everything up front yesterday but wasnt able to grease the drive shaft all the fittings were shot gotta change those out.

I am assuming you have an automatic transmission. 2 bolts could be on the fluid pan or part of the support mounts. On the fuel pump I try not to go below a 1/4 tank as fuel is actually a coolant to the pump. If the previous owner liked to keep it on empty most of the time that can cause a fuel pump to fail.

No I have a 5 spd tranny! The bolts are the acutally the bolts that holds the tranny onto the motor! Here again remember I'm not mechanic just calling it how i see it lol

I would go ahead and replace those 2 bolts. With those 2 bolts missing, would guess someone in the past has put in a clutch, and leaving those 2 bolts out might would make look into their previous owners mechanical skills and start double checking their work. I am not putting you down on your mechanical skills, as everybody has to start somewhere and mistakes do happen.

Okay thanks I will replace those bolts! Yeah I'm questioning there ability everything else looks good! It has a rebuilt motor and the werid thing about it is the bolts are in the tool box! Thanks alot for your help! I have read that low transmisson fluid could possible cause a jerk, but wouldnt that happen while changing gears and not randomly going down the road?

On an automatic it can, but yours is a manual, so I wouldnt worry about that. If it is jerking because of low fluid or no fluid you would have more severe problems most likely.You are on the right track as far as going thru all of the tune up/replace needed parts, after buying a used car. My 87 had the original fuel filter and shocks.

Alright thanks Terry, I have already bought the fluids to replace in the tranny and T case so going to go ahead and do that. Thanks for your help again!!

I will asked him! Thanks for your help as well! If it was a skip wouldn't see it in the rpms? Like say crappy plug, wires, etc?

Terry, Just to let you know figured out the skipping problem. The guy that rebuilt the motor must had a new ecu put in and the old one was in the toolbox. Needless to say I swapped them out and the skipping went away. The numbers and everything didnt not match up at all!

My money is on bad plugs - make sure he didn't use Bosch, they are total junk.

OEM on everything is the way to go.

Interesting, I have the same problem occasionally. I'm pretty sure it is the ECU as well, because the check engine light comes on for a split second, then back off. I still have the original ecu though, in my case perhaps it is a loose connection some where.

I know exactly what you're talking about, the engine stops and continues to run, but that stop is enough to cause your heart to miss a beat.

Wow why would someone switch out a perfectly good ECU for a skippy one? People are weird some times. Congratulations on fixing the problem!

Cyberman- thats is actually what my truck was doing as well. The numbers didnt not match up on the new ECU at all.

DethYota- Thanks! Yeah don't understand it at all! Just bought the truck maybe 3 weeks ago and still finding problems that could of been avoided.
