I have a 91 pick up 4x4 with a 22re. I have replaced the input shaft seal on the rear diff a couple times. I don't know what would cause it to start leaking so soon after replacing it. Thanks for any help, Danny

 

Check the vent on top of the axle housing, if its plugged your axle will leak no matter what.

 

x2. another thought: is the yoke thinger grooved where the seal rides?

 

Are you asking if the yoke shaft smooth? I think it is smooth. Would it leak if the bolt that holds the yolk is to tight or too loose?

 

I have a similar problem only mine is leaking from the front Diff, and it looks like it's coming from what my Haynes Manual describes as the drain plug. However...I can't seem to find a filler plug.

My theory is that perhaps a washer is beneath the drainplug, thus the seal has gone bad? Any ideas?

 

It may be the breather being clogged, as mentioned here. I saw that on another thread recently. If it's leaking around the gasket I have a DIY in my sig for an 87 4Runner gasket replacement.

How does one check the breather exactly and how is it cleaned/replaced?

 

The breather just screws into the axle housing, unscrew it and see if its plugged, clean it and put it back on.

 

Yep, mine got plugged and forced gear oil out the bottom of the third when after I drove it.

Pulled the breather and it was plugged solid!

 

Wow that sounds easy. I'm guessing something like brake cleaner or carb cleaner would do the trick?

 

Or get a 1/8" barb fitting, run a 1/8" pipe tap w/ a ton of grease on it in there, and then get some hose and extend the breather!
