Thumbs down Help I have no POWER need some gurus

I have a 86 4Runner 22 RE. I dont have any power and I stall everytime I slow down. Today I drove it into town to put gas and some seafoam in it I made up to 50mph with my peddle all the way to the floor and in 4th gear, and that is all she had. I have replaced plug wires and cap, throttle position sensor, and removed and inspected the fuel filter, that I had recently changed. No matter where I place the idle at or timeing nothing seems to help. I have set the time right at 5 degrees and have advanced it with no success. I have set the idle at 750 and have inreased it with no success. I even messed with the throttle position sensor with no success. Another interesting thing is when I get everything set and run for awhile it seems to start up just fine, but when I let it set and cool a little I have to advance the timing or open the idle to get it to start. I am lost on this I am pulling my hair out I need seem help.

Sounds like the knock sensor is retarding the timing OR you have a vacuum leak.

Have you taken compression of the cylinders?

Has it always done this or is this just recent?

I have hunted and hunted for vaccum leaks spraying everything with starter fluid. That doesnt mean there is not one but I dont think there is a big one if so.

knock sensor is good. I ended up setting the timing by ear and reduced the idle to 750. It runs great it isnt setting at 5 degrees but whatever. Does anyone have any input as to how this happened I kept everthing TDC the entire time, I changed the head gasket. I just cant imagine the crank gear being that forgiving. Thanks for everyones input, it has been very helpful. It runs better now than when I bought it, the diffrence is night and day.

You have to short the jumper AND have the tps set right or you can't set the timing correctly. You can set it without those things but it won't be right.

I did short the jumper and plugged the the vaccum lines coming from the distibuter. The guy that i bought it from said that he changed the timeing chain. So I wonder if he was off when he put it back together. I am not sure what is off but as for timing I followed the TOYO shop manual still dono but thanks for all comments.

almost sounds like the cam timing is off...the PO may have gotten it off a tooth.

you've got vacuum lines on a 22re distributor? okay.....

anyhow, I am sort of in agreement that the timing chain may not have been installed properly causing the cam timing to be off.\
The stalling may be a mis-adjusted dashpot.

Does anyone think that I could have a bad temp sensor. Now that I have everything appearing to run well ( at least better than when I first got it). It starts cold. It takes a little more from the starter in the morning. Also if i dont let it warm up before I drive and go a short distance (1/4 mile or so) it stalls, but once it is warmed up it is fine. I hooked my rpm gauge and started it when it was cold and the rpm's were low until it warmed up. Any thoughts?? thanks for everything so far everyone has been a big help.

I do not have an engine light that stays on. Sometimes when it starts the engine light will remain on breaifly. For about a minute or so and shut off. This only happens though when it is first started when it is cold, then it never shows up again. Ideas???

Yeah, check for trouble codes.

The fact that the CEL comes on at all means there is a problem.

The 1983/84 Celica 2R-E had a vacuum advance distributor. It's possible someone swapped a celica motor into it at one point.
