Help Diagnosing Random Stall

I have a 1988 Pickup with a 22RE. The truck was parked for about 2 years but before that the truck would run fine then randomly stall out of no where. When trying to start the truck back up, we would have to wait about 5 to 10 minutes before it would fire up again.

Now that we're trying to get the truck going again, it'll run just fine but stalls randomly when idling. If we keep the gas on it, we wont stall. It is also difficult to start and takes multiple attempts with lots of gas. I read that it could be a vacuum leak but the engine doesn't run rough at idle at all. I'm about to change the fuel filter right now to see if that makes a difference. Any help would be appreciated. I can also post a video of the truck running if that helps.

Help Diagnosing Random Stall

Fuel filter was replaced and mechanic checked it out for 2 hours. He also suspected a vacuum leak but couldn't find it.

Can you pull any ECU codes ? Might be ignition related , code 12,13,14 . My truck just went through this . Random stall , then crank but not catch , and then finally catch minutes or hours later . New igniter and ignition coil and hasn't happened since .

Help Diagnosing Random Stall

I don't have a check engine light so I didn't think that id be able to pull any codes. Am I right? We have a new coil in there with the old ignitor. It's there a way to test the ignitor? Thanks for input.

V_man did you get a Toyota ignitor or aftermarket? I'm hesitant to change it because I don't have a check engine light

Used Toyota denso , there are several on eBay , make sure your pick the right one for your year . I got mine from a junkyard for $80 ...

ECU might still be storing codes , directions for pulling codes here :

All I get is a consistent fast blink so no codes are stored. Anything else I should check?

No codes is a blink, 4 seconds, blink, 4 seconds and so on.

Here is a link to a video of my CEL blinking so that y'all know exactly what I'm talking about. I was reading on 4crawler and I couldn't find out what it meant.

I don't ever remember the CEL and the truck was sitting for about a year without a battery. How long would it take for a code to be brought up if there really was a code?

My mistake. The 1987 and 1988 model years are different in the flashes. That appears to be no codes as you said. Sorry!

Have you checked the rubber intake boot for cracks?

I just checked the boots with no cracks and tried starting up the truck again. It didn't idle at all this time after I put it back together and it gave me a code 14. Since the coil has already been changed I'm assuming the igniter is bad.

Possibly fuel flow problem, try some sea foam. Also clean the MAF sensor

I didn't have time to do anything today but does sea foam actually work?

I wanted to close the thread with the solution.

I ended up checking the new coil we had installed and it was out of the toyota spec. Headed to the autoparts store and bought another one but that was also out of spec so I searched for one that was in spec and threw it in. Idling problem solved.

After that I diagnosed an overheat to be a head gasket issue because I had low compression and exhaust gasses were in the coolant. I now need to read up on that and also change the timing chain and guides since those have never been changed.

Thanks for the help
