Help with a 22R Carb Rebuild
I did a search and I couldn't really find what I was looking for...
I have an 88 pickup longbed with a 22R. Latley it's been ideling kinda rough, and just doesn't seem to be running very smooth in general. It also seems like it's not getting as good of gas mileage as it used to.
I've had this Truck for 4 years and in that 4 years I've put nearly 100K miles on it ( it has 220K total). I've never really done any work to this truck other than basic maintanence, but I'm starting to think it needs a Carburetor rebuild.
So I was just wondering if rebuilding a 22r carb is task that a relative newbie could do? I know automotive basics, but I've never rebuilt a carb before.
Is this a job I can tackle? Anything I should know in advance? Tips? Roughly how long do you think it will take?
Thanks in advance for any help.

i haven't done a 22R carb personally, but i've rebuilt several other types of carbs. it's not really rocket science -- most carburetors aren't anywhere near as scary as they look in a parts breakdown. i have heard that the 22R carb isn't too terribly complicated to rebuild.
first, your symptom kind of sounds like a blown AAP(auxillary accelerator pump) diaphragm. when they go out, they flood the vacuum line that runs to it with fuel and that seeps into the intake. it'll cause the engine to run rough, foul plugs, black smoke etc. looking at the carburetor from the front of the truck the diaphragm is at the front right side of the carburetor on the bottom. pull the vacuum line off it, and if it's full of fuel, just go ahead and replace the diaphgram(you can get them at your toyota dealer).
if you do rebuild the carburetor, here's some advice. take your time, and work in a clean area where you won't loose any small parts. a factory service manual helps a great deal, as it'll show you every step necessary to rebuild it to factory specs. i've found that often times gaskets and other wear items just wear out, so taking things apart, giving them a thorough cleaning and reassembly works just fine.
an egg carton is nice to have around for organizing your small parts like jets, needles, and screws. make sure to have a few cans of carb spray on hand for cleaning out passages. and finally, make sure everything is clean, clean, CLEAN!

I had the same symptoms on my 22R, and a carb rebuild was recommended by the dealer (I didn't know better back then). They quoted something frickin ridiculous to dothe rebuild. I called TRD and they recommended a Weber 32/36 for about the same price as the rebuild. Basically 4 bolts and 2 wires later, brand new carb and better performance.
Long story short, I would just replace it not rebuild it.

i don't know, you could spend $500 on a weber(ever check the prices? webers haven't been made in 3 years due to the factory strike and prices have gone through the roof) or $40 on a carb kit and give it a shot.

Nope I knew mine was like $125-150, the stealer wanted somewhere around $200 for the rebuild. So might not be so cost effective any more...
Back then, I bought it straight from TRD when they had an incredibly comprehensive catalog

I've rebuilt many over the years. It helps to have a spare one for reference. If that's unavailable, I always take digital pics along the way on any new project that might need referencing later. There's not many parts to replace on them(2 gaskets, accel pump,Jet, needle & seat). The biggest thing while rebuilding them is spraying plenty of carb cleaner through every hole and using compressed air to blow them out. A $10 1 Gallon carb tank works great also. I wouldn't even open up the choke unless your having a problem with it.

Ive been working as a mechanic for over 6 years now, the 1st carb i ever rebuilt was my yota 22r carb. my boss who is a toyota master tech def had to help me, he said besides the old honda ones, its one of the harder to do. and I agree. There are a lot of springs and check balls. After i rebuilt it, still wasnt running right. there is a big valve on the side with two wires, its an idle valve. unscrew it 1/2 way and it ran great. they are exspensive to replace that part. I got lucky when i rebuilt the motor and got a dual port offenhouser intake with a holly 450 for $250. Now its freaking sweet

i managed to get a free 22r intake and carb, and i took the carb apart tonight, Ill say i have rebuilt lots of vw carbs, webers, dellortos hollys carters etc etc and this carb is funky. I managed to put it back together and will not attempt it without a factory manuel.
im going to research some other options, like a holly or weber carb, ive got my smog check for 2 years and i plan to move to texas and will not have to worrie about californias strick smog laws.
ive been told the stock carb is best for reliability, and after u rebuild it once your good for a long time, but all this vacume stuff sucks.

I've rebuilt a 22r carb, the cali-model. It took a evening but wasn't to terribly difficult.
I hate my brothers Weber. It's simpler but just... i just dont like it. besides the stock carb produces same power and has the gas shutoff solenoid so you can run a higher idle if you need to. ie no dieseling

Sorry to pull up an old post but, I just finished rebuilding my 22r cali model on my 84 and I wanted to know how many turns should the mixture be from all the way in? I failed smog and it is because the mixture was too lean. I have one free retest and I don't wanna lose it. Thanks
