Help! 1994 4x4 IFS Diff needed ASAP
Hello
I am new to the site, but in need of some help ASAP.
I have 1994 4X4 extra cab V6 3.0L 5 speed. It has 184,000 miles on it.
My Axel code Is: Code C/TR 196/FN11 A/TM G254/ R150F
VIN: JT4VN <<First 5.
I got a grinding noise coming from the front end and has been diagnosed as the front 7.5" IFS Diff being trashed by my local Toyota dealer. They want $3,300. ish to fix!! I have no clue why it would cost this much. I will know more once I get my truck back from Toyota today.
I need links or contacts in central Indiana for mechanics that will rebuild front diff.
I need junk yard links (database) to find used front diffs to swap in.
I will be looking on Craig’s list as well.
I need to get truck road ready in the next month for a possible 100 mile daily commute.
There is other work that needs done but right now the front Diff is priority!!
All tips and tricks to removing front diff will be appreciated!!
Already been to ZUK's site! Awesome!
Thanks
Jon

I'm assuming you don't already have manual hubs. You'll want them when you're doing that 100 mile daily commute. That'll take stress off your front diff also. When you get the new front diff (just buy one to swap in, don't have them rebuild it) get one that doesn't have the ADD and then it's just a simple swap over to manual hubs. It'll save you a lot in gas. You should be able to find a replacement front diff for a few hundred bucks and do the work yourself. I don't know where the dealership got $3300 from. They must be installing gold-plated parts now. Just make sure you've got matching gears.

Should be able to find plenty for $100 or so. I would not trust one Toyota mechanic to diagnose a "bad 7.5 front diff" They don't get used much generally. You should be remove the CV shafts and drive as 2wd for as long as needed. You'll have to do that step anyway when you replace the front diff. Might as well go ahead and get it done until you can find one. Or, you could get some manual hubs and then be able to unlock the CV shaft from the wheel and drive as long as needed that way too.

Great idea on installing manual hubs!
So the next question is I need step by step instruction's on installing manual hubs and which one's to buy?
From what I have searched its a easy task??
I will be doing more research but may be pulling the trigger on yanking front 3rd very soon. Need manual hubs first..
Thanks

It is very easy to do manual hubs. The hardest part is getting the cone washers to come out of the original hub flanges. There's plenty of tips out there for removing those too. You should expect to spend anywhere from $70-$150 on manual hubs, depending on how quickly you want them. Ideally they'll come with cone washers, washer, and nuts, but you can reuse your existing if you can get them off cleanly. The won't save you much/any in gas, but the convenience they add, and the ability to save some wear on the from cv shafts is nice. And in your case, the ability to drive your truck with a "bad" from diff. Good luck

Search car-part.com it'll find you one localhttp://www.car-part.com/
Edit I searched for it, there's only one in Indiana its a non add outta 88 for 200 didn't say the gear ratio
you have 4.56 gears btw unless you've changed them
But it did show that there's a whole add front axle with 456s for 100 at this placehttp://www.EbbingAutoParts.com/

I have the front diff you're looking for that I just took off a truck I'm parting (same axle code). I'm only looking to get $50 for it, however, I bet shipping will be ~$100. PM me if you're interested.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I am still looking for parts. The Aisin Hubs from WABFAB where salty for being rebuilt $250.00? Found a few on ebay but not sure what your getting there.. I will keep looking.
Still also looking for a local mechanic that works on diffs.
My truck also needs a clutch and power steering pump. The front Diff is Priority as the clutch only slips once and a while.
If anyone knows of anyone here in central Indiana that I could contact let me know.
Thanks

Didn't see the g254 axle code in the first post.
Here's a lead: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f11/...fs-rig-270563/
another edit: OK, being it's a 4.56 $225 isnt' so out of line. I thought it was a 4.10 for some reason. Shipping is going to kill whatever "deal" you may find on YT. I still think you can find one for $100-150, but if you're in a hurry, you might just pull the trigger on something. Aisin manual hubs are going for $60-$100 here on YT on the regular. It all depends on how big a hurry you are in.

I'm just thinking you should get a second opinion. These diffs get so little use generally. What exactly did they say was wrong with it again? It's easy for them to get off the hook by saying "yeah it's bad". They collect their money and move on to the next chump.
