Lightbulb Headlamp housing replacement

ive done a search and read alot of threads about changing the headlight housings out for hella/ipf H4 housings, is this possible on a 1993 4runner? i went to canadian tire to get a set of sylvanias but the clerk told me that i can only replace them with oem toyota units. also what is the difference between H4 and 9004 bulbs? is there any perfomance gain or is it just the type of connector?

Look at the back of the lamps:

H4:

9004:

If you have a ~5"x7" retangular housing, then the swap is a piece of cake:

I understand that there is a differance, but are H4 bulbs better?
and i dont have just a 5x7 housing it looks more molded to the shape of the front end.

If you have the molded housing, likely you have the 9004 lamps and you are sort of stuck with the housing you have. Might be some sort of option for converting those housings, but not familiar with them. For ease of swapping, you want to keep the same type of lamps as the connectors you currently have. That way you can just plug in new bulbs and be done. No real difference in H4 and 9004 bulbs, they are both available in various wattages, colors and what not. 9004 is probably a superior type of conector, being somewhat more sealed, H4 bulbs are probably less expensive since they are more commonly used.

You can get them at Cambodian Tire. They are Bosch units and are in the driving light section. Don't go by what they tell you cause they usually don't know. I have only been able to find them in pairs is the problem. Where abouts in Canada are you?
