I have a 1993 Toyota with the 22re and I was getting oil around the radiator cap and alot in the overflow, it never overheated but skipped some and everyonce in a while the temp hand would go above normal but not to the point of overheating.. I took the head off and now I need some help to know if that's the problem! Here's some pics..



Is the oil around the middle of the head part evidence of the problem or is it normal?

See how dirty the water jacket is.. Is that normal or also from the problem?

I need to know if the head gasket was for sure the problem and if replacing it will fix the oil problem before I put it back together

It is very hard to tell by just a picture. The head could have a bad crack, but unlikely. The problem is probably in the timing cover area. Possibly the chain is worn and wore a hole in the cover. That will put oil in the coolant fast. You need to have the head checked for cracks at a machine shop since you already have it off. Look down in the timing cover area while the head is off. You may not be able to see it. How many miles do you have on your rig? Was the timing chain and guides ever changed?
It will not be much more work to get the front cover off.

I have 167,xxx miles and I don't know its ever been changed cause I just got the truck, I haven't pulled the timing cover off yet but from what I can see the the guides are fine there is just some slack in the chain which I think is more than normal. I have the chain supported up on the sprocket where I pulled the head off but how do I keep it in time to pull the cover and lower gear and chain the rests the way off?

Going to say there is no way that gasket has 167k on it. Looks like it was done recently and never had the torque rechecked. If you had an issue with the timing cover you would know, lots of water in the oil pan. Also the slack is "normal" the tensioner runs off the oil system to derive it's pressure. Use zip ties or mechanics wire to hold the chain on the sprocket, like the book says

The oil in #2 with no visible run from anywhere would worry me. Definately have the head inspected.
