Its cold out side, so the white smoke at start up is normal. If it keeps smoking alot even after its warmed up then you have a problem.

As said above, do a compression test. Have you noticed your coolant level going down ?, if so then its either a bad head gasket or cracked head.

Wink

Chances are its more or so likely your head gasket then a cracked head. I can almost bet on it that once you change out your head gasket out then you will for surely notice the difference.. i cant see it having a cracked head unless it was thrashed pretty good... Yota heads are pretty good about that. so my best bet is... your head gasket is just old after sitting for so long...

based on the last post you might want to get the injectors cleaned (try a bottle of fuel additive first before you fork out for a removal and heavy clean) but other than that white smoke on start is perfectly normal for this time of year in the "balmy" NE winter weather lol... if it was summer maybe you'd have a concern if it was a hot dry day but a little smoke is normal for a cool damp evening even in summer... it's just the condensation "boiling" out of the system as it warms up...

What was the determining factor in your "finding" out it was the head gasket? Have you been losing coolant? Does the oil look like a french vanilla milkshake? those would be the big indicators of a blown head gasket. Loss of coolant and it has to go one of two places, out the exhaust or into the oil. Just my thoughts.

Mine smokes on startup but I'm pretty sure its not coolant, but oil. Coolant level doesn't really drop but it does use oil. Someone has suggested that the valves are leaky and there is leakdown when it sits. When I start it up, I am just burning off the oil? Just for peace of mind, is the best start a compression test? I had the spark plugs replaced as part of a big tune-up last year and have probably driven it a total of 7k since then. Its a 91 pick-up with 277k.

Same here. My exhaust smells sickly sweet, loosing coolant, surges sometimes at idle (low coolant), condensation on the oil cap, misfire sometimes on warm-up, low coolant but the spill over tank (?) bubbles like it is boiling, heck you can see exhaust gas when the radiator cap is off. Oh lets not forget the white smoke.

Just ordered new gasket and head bolts from the stealer, gasket is $46.00 and the bolts $7.00 each. I know your supposed to be able to reuse the 22re bolts, but why risk it. I just did the timing chain (Haaadddd to) 4000 miles ago. Could have replaced head then but tried to save a dime and now I have to spend a dollar. If anyone near nashville tn would like to do the work, you know for the experience and warm belly feeling, come on over, all the beer you can drink.

Having the head worked Monday, gasket in on Tuesday, see you Wednesday night.
176,000 miles, 22re, I love that truck!
