Hello first of all its my first time and am excited

Well I have a 22re 95 Toyota pickup with 200k in it started overheating but oil was always fine replaced everything such as water pump radiator etc decided to go Witt the head gasket and timing chain I did the job myself took me about 3 days thank to a great write up by a user named 92 TOY
When I removed the cylinder head it had 3 cracks so I decided to buy a brand new one
Also a timing chain kit. I bolted the whole thing up with new head bolts so it was time to turn it on I was excited WELL I tried to turn it on its wouldn't it cranked like 6 times and I let it go after I let go I heard a pop sound .. I tried again and it turned on at a really high idle and 5 seconds later it died check the oil dipstick and it looked like frappucino i was really bummed out

Can someone please help me and tell me what I did wrong ???
I will be taking it apart tomorrow morning I'd appreciate any help from you guys

 

Will need some pictures to see. Before I would pull it back apart, I would run a compression check. Was the timing cover damaged before? Could of gotten a hole and had a leak and got water in the oil.

Need to know what the "pop" was. Chain, backfire...?

 

Yeah I'll start taking it off today and also I'll be posting pictures .. It was leaking from the back by the firewall ..

Also I used the same timing cover it had some damage but I didn't think bad of it maybe I was wrong

The pop sounded like a backfire idk if that was he sign the new head gasket blew

 

I just took off the brand new cylinder head and the new head gasket

What did I possibly do wrong the gasket and cylinder head are in phenomenal shape ???

I torqued the head bolts to 58

 

Can I re use this head gasket

 

So I installled it.. Tried to crank the engine it wouldn't turn over after the 4th time it turned of it idled really high and then died when it died I heard a loud pop inside the engine ???? Am clue less right now

 

Did you reinstall that used gasket? That is a no no.

Check the head and block for warpage with a straight edge, if they are ok put a new gasket on and try.

Those are basic mechanical do/don't.

And all the help i can be as I'm still learning these engines myself.

 

No this was the new one I used when I changed out the old one it doesn't reveal any failure neither Thad the block or the new cylinder head ..

But after I cranked it's turned over started at a very high idle then dropped and died .. Check the new oil It looked like frappucino..

 

Better drain that "new" oil asap and put from fresh stuff in. Also, following up on Terrys87's comment, did you reinspect the timing cover for damage?

 

Yeah I did ..

Am going to inspect the timing cover it might of went bad...

 

So I removed everything .. I noticed that the EGR valve was leaking a lot could that give me a high idle and die ?? And the detonation???


I removed the timing cover it looks fine the chain and everything else is all good ..


But could the EGR valve cause the mixture of coolant in the oil .. 10 seconds after the car ran and died

 

Don't hate me here but judging from some of your questions I think if at all possible you need to have someone with more experience take a look at it.

 

The EGR does not have any water flowing thru it. There is a plate on the back of the head that I think may have water flowing thru it but cant recall right off. The EGR would not have caused any water leaks.

These motors do not like air leaks of any kind. Are all of your hoses routed correctly? The one valve that controls your Fuel Pressure Regulator will causes all kinds of havoc if it is not hooked up or hooked up correctly. It is one of the first things I check on a rough idling truck. Might need to replace alot of your hoses as well. Just go buy a few feet at your local part store and swap one at a time.

You will see tracks in the timing cover where the chain rubbed on it. It doesnt always rub a hole in it but it is where it will be if a hole is there. It will be on the botom right of the timing cover if it is there.

 

The EGR allows a small amount of exhaust to go into the intake which reduces NOx emissions and helps reduce pinging. If the EGR is stuck open it will idle rough or even stall at idle, if the gasket leaks it will be a vacuum and/or exhaust leak. If you overheated the engine to the point where the head had 3 cracks, you should also check the block for cracks.
