Question Has this happened to anyone? im somewhat shocked...

Ive had an exhaust leak for a while. its been getting louder and louder until today. On my way home i could tell almost no exhaust was going through my muffler by the sound and it was loud as hell. i knew the exhaust leak was major now. anyways i take a peek under the truck and about 2inches after the manifold the exhaust pipe is snaped right in half.

the truck has been under normal driving conditions and no recent 4wheelin.
my mind is boggled as to how this happened.

does anyone have any idea for has had this happen?

sorry, here one is:

the line you see is where it broke.
ill have more pictures tomarrow as i tear it off and weld it up
hopefully it being welded doesnt cause something else to brak in the future.

its a clean break, that is what concuses me so much. its there the pipe bends underneath the cab.

If you have the 4 banger, almost every one I have ever had on the rack had a crack similar to that somewhere within a foot of where the pipe bolts to the manifold, even the four 4 bangers I have family experience with.

hard to tell the angle on the pic and where the crack is in relation to the manifold

looks like i see the heat shield on the tranny bellhousing

odd crack, never seen something like that before. I'd say it had something to do with the wya the head pipe was wedged on the tranny heatshield. Mine pushes on the tranny.

bummer i just cut a good head pipe and took it to the dump =(

I had a transmission shop break mine right around there when the idiot dropped the tranny on the pipe below...

After first telling me it was like that when I brought it in, then second denying doing it, when the puerto rican tech finally admitted (in spanish I might add...) to his boss he did it they took it out and welded it back up.

Knock on wood it's been fine since then...

Depends on the type of performance you want.

Stock manifolds are fine with the right exhaust behind 'em.

Mine did that years ago when I first bought it. There seems to be weak points in the 4cyl. exhaust system. Mine always tends to rust in certain areas and eventually leak. The fellow at my regular exhaust shop says the 4cyl motors don't burn as hot as larger motors, so condensation will collect and not burn off as much. He explained much better than I am now, but it made sense to me.....the way he explained it.

try supporting the section w/ a flexible connection to the frame.
i have had others crack(not toyoyta) that were attached directly to the frame

Bingo.
Hard exhaust lines fatigue much more frequently than exhaust systems with the ability to entertain some flex.
Your entire truck flexes quite a bit...

happened to me after I ran without a muffler for about a year, and then I got one put on, and it snapped. It was unbelieveably loud!

Yeah, it's essentially the same effect as cut-outs. Or what's called an "open" exhaust, no cat no muff. Good for power, bad for your neighbors tension headaches. I only run a cat, which I unbolt when I want my truck to sound like a drag monster. ROOOOOAAARR!!!!!!!!

Hmmmm...maybe that hard exhaust mount at the tranny needs to be mod'd with a flex bushing and hanger....like the rest of the pipe route.

So, who will be the first?

well i took it to the local muff shop and they welded it up for $20

lukily the pipe had not crystalized so it could still be welded.
if it had been the pipe would have had to been replaced, they estemated it at $160 with a big discount.

i was kinda hoping for that since a header cost about that much ^-^
