Hard to start in cold

Purchased a 86 Toyota 4runner with a 22Re motor. The only problem that the guy said it had was in the coldest of days it is terribly hard to start. He states that it seems like the fast idle does not work. He said it has never failed to start but it takes a little time for it to hit. Runs perfectly besides that. Any ideas where to start.

i take it the problem is fuel deivery. try this try and start the engine and hold the starter for about five seconds then shut off the key switch and take the key out then immediatelly put the key back in and start it. it works because when you shut the key switch off and re turn it on the fuel pump reprimes itself because before it coudnt move the fuel as fast as it was bein injected.

Could be one or multiple problems.

The auxiliary air valve increases the idle speed when the motor is cold. It usually just gets plugged up from dirt that has bypassed then air filter coupled with the crankcase vapors sucked through the PCV valve.

If the truck is cranking excessively before running, it's probably be the cold start injector time switch which signals the cold start injector to shoot off some extra fuel when the temperature is below 80F.
