whatever you decide, i will advice on long tubes.
as my headers on my bmw are "shortys", and the gasket that connects the 4 pips has blown out at least a dozen times.
i ended up re-surfacing them (even though they were new) and used orange silicon added to the last set of gaskets.
= P.I.T.A.
long tubes for me from now on.
i too am planning the headers on my 3.0 too, (keep the engine bay cooler is always beneficial)
take some pix for me.

yes, you can bend your own headers, but like above reply, is a huge undertaking. the specifications are beyond my scope of knowledge.

Again.
Stock is your best bet.
Bolting an exhaust and all that crap will buy you a cool sounding truck. You will see about dick in the areas of power, torque, or mpg. If you want power, torque and better mpg, swap in a 3.4L.
Exhaust, intakes, all that crap, is a total waste of money on a naturally aspirated engine. Get something with a turbo or supercharger, and you'll have a case.

If you want a better sounding rig, get em. if your after MORE then 5-10HP, and MORE then a half an MPG at best, then you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Because your only gonna see small gains, and if your on a budget, that setup will cost ya some serious $$$$$.
EDIT: Dont get me wrong, though. I'm TOTALLY HAPPY with my results, and would recommend this mod for just about everyone despite the high price of the headers.

Ceramic headers are the best to keep engine bays cool. Chrome not only warp color but can get the bay hot as well similar to cast iron. Headers for the 3.0 are a waist. plus youll never get power out of that motor

living at sea level has its perks
i seriously doubt any of the bolt on stuff i have makes much of a difference other than cooler #5 and #6 temps and having a toyota that you can hear a half mile away when it revs past 3k.

im looking for an exhaust pipe for my truck. at autopartswarehouse they have some nice ones for like 40 bucks ($$ i know) but the rest of my runner is chrome, i gotta do it.
as for the sound, i dont know about your truck, but mine is pretty deep (maybe this is a bad thing)...

i'm pretty sure i'm goin with LCEenginering headers and exhaust i don't think borla makes an exhaust for our trucks anymore or at least i cant find one on the web. 2.25 most likley for me. i just can't picture myself bolting those stock manifolds back on. duals would be nice too(but not on the wallet)

NOT true, headers lower temperatures, due to NOT being a hunk of cast iron which disapates heat slower and with more mass, will generate more heat.

I like my Downey headers, they do run right against the floorboard of the passenger side but it never gets hot. I wrapped a peice of exhaust shielding off a newer Chevy Trailblazer and it protects all the wires and lines running next to the frame. As far as power gains, the exhaust is the only thing that has done anything for my truck, idk if it was worth the money i spent but it is the best mod i've done and it has a bit more power. When i rebuilt my engine, i wrapped my headers and it keeps the engine bay ALOT cooler. My total was about $950 for the headers, muffler, cat, and having the exhaust installed from the headers back.

Radiators dissipate heat quickly.
By your theory, we should get rid of those, and get something that retains the heat for a long time.

I think the 3VZE would gain more from headers than most applications due to the poor original exhaust manifold configuration.
Of course to maximize the effect of the headers some other mods would be necessary, and to get the full benefit of those mods you'd need to do even more.......
I think you get the Idea.
