Going for my 3rd Remanuf. P/S pump.
I recently replaced my engine and while I was in there had the P/S pump replaced since it was shot. 1st one was from Advance, leaked didn't pump...returned for full refund...2nd one was from Autozone..now that one is leaking..my mech says it's no good...now I need to replace that one...so far..about $300 pump + labor...now another pump replacement will cost $120 labor..guess I don't really have any other choices...I wish I would have rebuilt the original one..hindsight 20/20 as they say...tried stop leak no go..ya know I should have bought a new one from Toyota...price was like $300 and I thought it was too much...now I'm spending that much anyway..just venting..food for thought for anyone else..

First, are you filling it with ATF or power steering fluid? My money is on PS fluid and that's why you're having the problems.
The other thing I think I found on mine was having the vacuum lines that go into the bottom of it backwards. I switched them around this time, and the pump is working TONS better.
I get mine from AutoZone and they have a lifetime warranty.
Lastly, changing the PS pump is not that difficult. STOP PAYING FOR THE LABOR!

X2 on using dexron only for the PS.
But. A friend of mine has a 98 Taco, 3.4 and he is on his 4th pump. The third time we replaced the rack also. Only thing that hasn't been replaced is the lines. Flushed each time it was replaced and it again is starting to growl. One good thing is he got the pump from auto zone so it is a lifetime warr.
We also got one from advanced and it only lasted maybe 6 mos. So he has 2 with lifetime warr. He takes a bad one back and we put anew one in then he takes the other bad one back for a new one so he don't have to wait for another pump. Aways has one on hand. lol. I told him most likely the only way he can fix it for good is with a Toyota pump.
It is real easy to change. About 1/2 hr and it's changed and the fluid flushed.

As the head pressure on the pump builds (at the end of the stearing box) you risk stalling the motor due to the load the pump puts on it.... so thats a pressure switch which opens when the pressure gets high to bump up the idle.
it does not affect the hydrauclic action of the pump what-so-ever
as for a 4 year old can change it? the pully is a roaly PITA to take off, the highpressure hose is a SERIOUS pita to take off, and the nipples on the above mentioned vacume switch are like glass twigs, you break one off and your looking at a new $90 switch. (ask me how i know) the thing is greesy mess and its IMPOSSIBLE to get to the rear mounting bolt unless your some chineese acrobat.
I HATE working on my PS pump. and im on my second and its been leaking for the past year because i dread swaping it out yet AGAIN!

well thanks for the input guys...I have been using ATF to refill..but I'm not sure if my mech used ATF when he swapped out my original one..I know ATF is red and it looked clear/yellowish when I got it back..anyways..if a 4 yr old could do it then maybe a 2yr old could do my brake job..right

My tip for getting the pulley off is to use a LARGE open end wrench over the shaft, then pry it off.

From what I've read around the net, you want the PS kit from toyota. The seals in the dealer kit are supposed to be superior to the aftermarket kits.
