you can fix 3/4 of the problems with an engine rebuild... okay, maybe 1/2

It may not be the truck, but more the previous owner, but this thing is a nightmare! For some encouragement...

Lower the bars, it's easy, fast, and you can align yourself, all for free. T-bar adjusting instructions are on this site and www.sdori.com has alignment instructions. Again, the tires are shot because the truck wasn't aligned. I mean if you aligned it, then lowered the bars without realigning, you'd trash the tires.

What part of the smog test are you failing. It could be a simple fix. Post the numbers up here and we'll see what we can do.

Change the transmission fluid with Redline MT-90. The stuff is amazing. I had a truck with a grinding 3rd with almost 300,000 miles on it. That stuff eliminated the grind and it shifted like new. I'm not kidding, try this stuff.

Horns are cheap, check to make sure the temp sense wire is still plugged in.

Hold off on the rebuild unless you have low compression or are seeing blue smoke or steam out the tail pipe. A bad O2 sensor or VAFM out of adjustment can fail a smog test. Again, post the numbers, they'll help to diagnose the issue.

Would'nt a "ghetto lift" actually be a couple cinderblocks under the axles and no rims?

I once saw a truck with wooden lift blocks in front of a high school. Can't imagine that lasted long.

Ok here are my test results...

HC: 15MPH - 105
25MPH - 60
CO%: 15MPH - 0.59
25MPH - 0.40
NO: 15MPH - 2038
25MPH - 1809
O2: 15MPH - 0.5
25MPH - 0.2
CO2%: 15MPH - 14.4
25MPH - 14.8

I think the truck may have a "high flow" cat. I'm not sure if this is affecting my NOx. I replaced the EGR valve, and cleaned the vacuum lines of carbon, and replaced PCV.

Molly, don't be jealous of Ohio trucks!

I would like to say that my truck has spent its entire 16 years here in the Buckeye state, and it has nowhere near that amount of rust.

To the OP... provided you get your other issues sorted out, might I suggest getting a body lift? Acheives your desired goal with no extra strain on the suspension. Cheaper, too.

maybe if you plumbed the excess emissions into an air-bag setup, you could get the lift you want?

Hahaha, 20 yr old trucks are fun, aren't they? I had a 93 pickup 4x4 a few years ago that it seemed the same way. There was always something messing up, and that truck nearly $100ed me to death. It seemed like every part that broke was right around that range. I don't think it had a bit in the world to do with the fact that I was always beating on it!!

Honestly, all that is pretty easy stuff to take care of. Just take a Saturday and a 12 mm combination wrench and have at it. You should be able to take care of most of the problems with a couple hours work. For your emissions, first make sure your idle and timing are right then go from there.

So, you failed NOX bad. Too bad to just be a malfunctioning EGR. You need to replace the cat for one. Test the O2 sensor to make sure it's working, if it is failing, it will enrich the mixture which will cause the cat to overheat and degrade the internals. The FSM links have tests for the EGR but if it is not throwing a code (CEL) then it is probably Ok. So, install the cat, check the O2,and retest.

I'm in the process of buying a cat. Before I replaced the EGR, my NOx were in the 3500 range. So far that is the only thing I'm failing. Also my idle is weird. I need to figure that one out.

It should pass fine then which will scratch a big one off of your list.

As suggested I'd make sure the truck is tuned up, good plugs, correct timing, all that.

The suspension is an easy fix. With a few weekends this truck will be doing much better. There will always be little things to fix, that's just the nature of old vehicles, but they will get fewer and farther between.

Poor idle is a sign of an improperly adjusted or broken throttle position sensor:

With that off, it may be the timing is messed up and that can lead to high NOx readings.

Good point! Also, should that be able to trick the engine into running too rich it will ruin the new cat.
