Getting hard to shift?

Ever since I bought the truck I notice its became a little harder to shift, nothing I have to force just feels like it grabs more, espacially going into reverse and first, Im going to check fluids tonight to see if that could be the problem, Ill let you guys know, but what else could it be? Your input will help very much appreciated.

Ahhh, how about enough information to begin helping, like engine size, auto or manual tranny ?

It's been decades since I've read minds and I think that I've forgotten how
Maybe just pull the truck a little closer to the computer and maybe we can see it

probably the w56.

Its probably either the fluid is old, some air in the clutch, or the shifter seat is worn out. or possibly a combination of the three

Hard shifting into reverse is perfectly normal for these trucks. Even the owners manual talks about the problem...

My tranny is having similar difficulty, but mainly with the 1-2 or 3-2 shift. I can feel a little grabby before it slides into gear.

I looked at the fluid and it was plenty full - but if the fluid is old will it do this? The oil did not look dirty, but does it lose it's lubrication quality?

A good GL-4 gear oil will work better than the more common GL-5 oil in the manual transmission:

Might be worth a shot at changing if you don't know what is in there or how old it is.

yep, a lot of people like to use MT-90 from redline, and claim to get smoother shifts with it. Next time you have trouble getting it into reverse place it in neutral. and let off the clutch, and then back on and take it from between 1st, and 2nd into reverse. If it goes in smooth that way its probably a clutch issue. If not it would point to one of the other issues

I think the rubber boot just keeps dust, and mud out. you should replace it when you get a chance.

There are clutch asjustments on the master cyl, to change pedal height, and freeplay, and how much it pushes the master. check the FSM for the adjustment procedures.

not sure on the capacity, but i'd like to know myself. typically 3qts will do ya on a manual, but i'd love to know the actual capacity.
