I have an opportunity to grab up a new pair of genuine Toyota leaf spring sets in the wrapper. There are only 2 leafs plus the overload, but the leafs are thicker than stock, maybe 3/8". they were ordered for a uhaul toyota truck prob 2wd? but the dimensions work out. Would you guys take a chance on putting them on an 88 4runner? I put long add a leafs on my worn out leafs a while back, but they are too stiff. I want some more flex back. worth 100$?

 

Has anybody seen this combo before on a stock truck? I just found out that they were ordered for a Toyota Uhaul truck but they were the wrong leafs.
the pic is not great but its taken close to the axle and you can see the two thick leafs on the right and the OL on the left if you squint a bit and turn your head 90 degrees.

 

Odd looking for sure. If they are for a uhaul truck, they might be pretty stiff on your runner too but $100, that's tempting. I've never seen a Toyota uhaul truck, that's awesome, I wonder what kind of drive train they run in it.

 

From the pic this morning they like more like 1/4 to 5/16" thick. Might add an old leaf from my old pack or I was thinking I could add some air bags if they are too weak. I am only looking to clear 31" tires and have better flex than the add a leaf/original flat leafs. I could cross link them with a valve in between the bags to close on the road but open it on the trail. Is that a good backup plan if they are too weak? One thing always leads to another, right?

A cheaper route that works fairly well is a Zuk mod, you run a stiff racing coil between your rear bump stops. I did it on mine so I could remove the 4" blocks I had - you can check my sig to see how it's done - but lots of 4runners here have done it to get rid of the sag, Chef has a good write up on it.

 

Ive seen late 80's to 90's model 2wd duallys before, with a small box on the back and I think that is what these were ordered for but they didnt work out for that application. I worked at a uhaul rental center back in the early 90's.

 

I have almost pulled the trigger on a ZUK mod 3 times now! I may still do it yet! I plan on keeping this 4runner 'til I die and kept hearing that it wasnt a long term solution by other peeps. I like the concept and have no problem with modding a new bumpstop if need be. If I can pick up these new leafs and some air bags cheap, that would be pretty cool to link, unlink or air up to level out. I think I am talking myself into this deal.

To hijack my own thread, anybody know where I can get some cheap firestones?

There's a no cut zuk mod using jeep coils that fit over top the upper bump stop. And I would say it isn't permanent, I plan on putting some new springs or 63" springs at some point. For now, it was a cheap way to get rid of my blocks, and the ride is surprisingly nice.

 

Buy em.. maybe a little stiff at first but loaded i think they'd be jam up. I plan on purchasing one of those uhauls or just a dually as an every day driver maybe (hopefully) swap in an om617.

 

If you do get them let me know the results. Im looking for the right answer for the sag and my first choice is a 2" OME lift but would be happy without the lift if i could get the back end up without too much modification. Id like to know more about the no cut jeep coil idea as well

 

At 70$ for the pair, I couldn't resist. I'm just now getting around to installing them this weekend. The leafs are thinner than what I thought though. I'll post up some pics if anyone is interested.

 

I will try to find a part# for you but I bet these are going to be pretty pricey coming from Toyota. I think I found a needle in a haystack. I'll probably have to mix and match another leaf in there, but it's all good.
