gearing question
#23
My 4Runner came stock with 31s, 4.56, 3.0, and 5sp, with 31x10.5 BFG ATs it drove just fine around town and in the mountains, I just had to down shift to 4th (at 60-70 mph) to maintain speed uphill, but that's fairly normal.
I switched to 33x10.5 BFG AT and everything changed. Around town it was fine, on the highway it was fine so long as it was flat or down hill, but the minute there was even a slight increase it wouldn't keep up. The same hills I would down shift to 4th to hit at 65-70, I had to down shift to 3rd and run at 55-60 mph, 4th wouldn't cut it and 5th was completely out of the question.
I was tempted to regear to 4.88, but after calling around and getting quotes for $900 I was a bit discouraged and decided to deal with it a little longer.
Then I burnt a valve in the 3.0 and decided to swap in a 3.4 rather than fix the 3.0. Now with 33x12.5 Duratracs, a 3.4L, and the same 4.56s and 5speed, I can hit that same hill (the one I had to take in 3rd at 55-60) in 5th at 70-75 (or 80 if I really wanted to push it).
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

well I'm getting more and more tempted to do it.
It doesn't feel like there are any trail I can't take, once low gear is engaged it really feels like it'll climb anything I'd do throw at it. So regearing only makes sense to help with regular driving - which is mainly hills around here...
came across that thread again: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...k-3vze-187741/ while looking through maintenance stuff.. and found what he said about the exhaust system..
as anyone tried/seen any relevant power increase when switching to a good aftermarket exhaust system?
