gas tank ?

Did the earlier 2nd gen 4runners with the spare tire carrier on back have a different gastank? I have a 95 and it hangs pretty low. Just wondering if there are any other options out there other than a fuel cell.

When I replaced my tank this summer I first got a tank from a 95 4Runner, but later had to take it back and get one from a 90, because the 95 was 2" deeper and I'd have to get a new skid also.

I have a side by side shot of the 95 and 91 tanks that I'll post later (when I find it), but the only difference was the depth of the bottom half of the tank. The top half of both looked exactly the same.

If your looking for a lower profile tank try to find a '90 or '91; I'm 95% sure thats what the parts guy at my local dealership told me.

Sweet what's the capacity of the smaller tank? And will that spare tire carrier bolt onto a 95?

When mine rusted out, I put in a fuel cell for exactly that reason - it was a rock MAGNET.

Supposedly, Cherokee fuel tanks will fit under the back where the spare tire goes.

I ended up putting the cell in the cargo area so I wouldn't have to fab a skidplate for it, saving a ton of money.

I don't know the exact number, but I usually put 14-15 gallons in it after the gas light has been on for 4-5 miles.

As for the tire carrier, I've read that there is a metal plate welded to the inside of the body that the carrier bolts to and helps to support the weight of the tire and carrier.

Not sure - remember seeing one of the expedition guys had done it - either Expeditions West or BajaTaco.

Thanks next time they have one at the junkyard I'll have to check it out. I removed the running boards and am putting rocksliders on it nextweek. They just seem kinda pointless if you cant slide on them without ripping your gastank off. Anyway how close dose the skidplate fit to the lower profile tank?
