Gas smells

I got my 4runner about 3 weeks ago... I've been driving it every day since, except for the last 2 days because I was too lazy to put gas in it so i just drove my other car because it had a full tank. My driveway is a hill and I left it parked there but when I moved it last night it smelled like gas really bad and there was a spot on the ground that also smelled like gas. I looked under the truck and didn't see anything. My boyfriend looked under the truck and claimed there was gas dripping on his head and tried to show me but I didn't see anything still. When I looked in the wheel well I could see dark wet spots on top of the gas tank, so I stuck my hand in it and it looked like motor oil but smelled like gas. WHat might be leaking? Might there be a hole in my gas tank?

Check the filler neck, our T100 got a split in it and gas would come out sometimes. Although, since your tank was low it's not as likely

i have the same proble. looks like motor oil but its the grime eaten away from the gas spilling. you probably have a hole in your gas tank. i do! (needs to fix this)

The most common fuel leak issue with these 3VZ-Es is the fuel pulsation dampener. It is located on the RH fuel rail at the very back under the intake plenum. It is visible if you get a flashlight and look straight down into the engine. Sometimes a mirror helps.

1,2,3,4: Whatever you do... get it fixed asap. Probably don't have to tell you this, but a lot of people lose vehicles to fire every year... often preceded by gas smells. My sister lost a jeep just that way.. even after warning her to stop everything else and get it fixed. In her case, it was the fuel injection system leaking which dropped on the exhaust manifold.

Your case doesn't sound as dangerous, but why take a chance.
