Gas Smell

I have a 1986 4Runner that runs great, burns some oil due to bad valve seals. I have recently gave it a tune up at 90,000 with new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, reconditioned K&N Filter. Truck starts right on point, no hesitation at all. My problem lies with a huge gas odor in garage after I get home and shut her down. I got my flash light out and watched my fuel filter fitings and no leaks. I tried my best to watch the fuel rail but didn't see any drips. Truck is solid with no rust what so ever, never seen snow or salt here in MI. Followed the fuel lines back to the tank and no visible leaks. Charcoal canister doesn't show any kinds of leaking as well. I do see some wetness on the back of the block on the intake side but I wiped my finger along it and it doesn't smell like fuel. Maybe I was used to the smell by then. Any type of help would be appreciated.

I think it is my Fuel Pressure Dampner/Regulator at the beginning of my fuel rail. Plan on replacing it and will let you all know if that was the reason. 137$ for a small piece, ouch....

I'm curious to find out what it was. I would have responded sooner to your original post but I was on forced vacation

pics would help also, so we can see what you do.

Your 86 seriously has 90k miles? Holy Moses.

I hope you found your problem, and fixed it. And then I hope you drive it more than 3913 miles this year.

Good luck,
Alex

I have been experiencing the same problem with my 91 4runner 3.0. I get a fuel smell sometimes after shutting it down from driving, I never have any problems starting it though. I also noticed some gunk back behind/underneath the intake manifold but it didn't smell like fuel to me either. I would love to hear what that problem is and how you fixed it if you get it sorted out.

Thank you everyone for replying to my post and sorry I haven't come back to it in a couple weeks. Yes it was the Fuel Damper which is located towards the front of the fuel rail. I did replace both Copper Crush Washers and no more fuel smell I just bought this truck with only 86k back in Augaust so I plan on driving it a whole lot next spring, summer and fall but no winters. In Michigan the salt is used everywhere and don't want this gem to fall apart. My mechanic who changed my gears, 4.88's, commented during the whole installation how clean it is and how easy to work on it is. He said cars a couple years old in MI aren't nearly this easy!

Gnarly4x thanks for the pics. I didn't notice those at first but that is exactly what I replaced.

On the old damper the screw was tight, but the metal looks badly corroded. I'm not sure what the functionality is for the plastic cover? If the screw happened to vibrate loose and fall out (which is what the Service Tech at my local Toy dealer said sometimes happens), there'd be so much fuel spraying out (lots of pressure) that you couldn't help but smell it and see it, AND I don't think the engine would run ..... too much drop in fuel pressure.

I'll have to check that out on my truck. How much was the part? Did you get it from the dealer?

Are those pics you posted from a V6 or a 4 cylinder? I had assumed we were talking about the 3.0 but I just noticed no one specificly stated that, lol.

Mine was on a 4cyl - 22RE. Luckily I have a friend who got it for $80 at my local Toyota Dealership. It is great to have friends in great places, a Toyota Dealership!!! It would have cost me 140 otherwise.
