Gas Gauge doesn't work completly! What's Wrong!

Okay my gas gauge in my 87 Toyota 4x4 doesn't work all the way.

When I have a full tank my gas gauge reads 1/2 a tank
Once the first 5 gallons have gone through my tank reads under empty and kinda just sits there. I'm pretty sure the gas light doesn't come on either?

Pretty much only the first 5 gallons if a full tank is all I know
Nothing else

Is it the sending unit? Or what's going on. I need help

Most likely your float assembly is full of rust. I have been able to get them working by pulling it out and soaking in rust desolver and a wire tooth brush and give it a good scrubbing. The rust wont let it move about freely. Check especially around the pivot point. Here is one I have half way cleaned up. If that is the case with yours, you probably have other gas tank issues as well. Either one of my 4Runner builds has information on how if fixed mine. I think I have more information listed on the 88 though.

Most likely the cause of this is the sulfer in the gas we use causes a buildup on the brass contacts on the sender and causes a bad conection and a bad reading.Gm products have a real bad problem with this.As far as I know there isnt really a way to clean it up the only solution is in the above post replace it.
