fuel pump issues....
okay im brand new to this forum! and this is the first 4 runner ive owned but not the first toyota, so i bought this truck not running due to the owner saying fuel pump was not working. brought the truck to my house replaced the fuel pump even though the one in the tank looked brand new even all the connections were clean.
it would not start.... so we checked all the ignition, spark, distributor, starter, fuses, put new battery pos connections and cleaned everything up. stiill no start. sprayed gasoline in the motor while cranking and it fired up! but died as soon as we stopped spraying fuel. used a test light on the fuel pump connections and got nothing. we checked the EFI relay and it is working fine, not to sure what to do now??
heard something about a circuit opening relay. how do you test this? and where is it? and also the mas how would u test this? any help is appreciated
p.s car has new sparkplugs and wires, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuses are good and efi is good, new intake filter and rad.

You mean you checked for continuity between the fuel pump & where? If you have not power to the fuel pump, first thing I'd check is the VAFM. You say you sprayed fuel into the intake....is the intake hose off? If so, it WILL NOT RUN that way. The VAFM must be installed properly for the engine to start/run.
More info, please~

We checked continuity at the top of the tank, the connection that runs off the top of the tank.
No we didn't take the intake off just sprayed fuel into a breather hose that comes off the valvecover and goes into the intake right beside the throttle body, where and what is the vafm?

VAFM - Volume Air Flow Meter - what the 3VZE has instead of a mass air sensor. It's the big metal thing attached to the air filter housing. It contains a trap door-like vane that measures the air flow into the motor. It has to open some to close a ground for the relay that controls the fuel pump. No air flow, no fuel pressure. It also measures intake air temperature.
It's the aluminum part attached to the air filter box in this pic:

The first thing you can do is double check that the door/flap is not obstructed. Unclip the 3 metal clips around the edges & look inside/push the door with your finger. If it moves freely, try starting while someone holds the door open just a touch. If it doesn't fire then, I'd start checking the VAFM more thoroughly. Did you ever try to remove the wire connector to the VAFM? It comes off with a metal clip, & many folks make the mistake of trying to remove it with the screws; DO NOT DO THIS!!
Let us know what you get.
There's a procedure in the FSM to check the VAFM, but I don't have that info right now.

okay so i checked out the vafm and it all seems like it works fine, right now im on the verge of buying a couple feet of 18gauge wire and running it straight to the battery with a fuse.

okay guys, got the damn thing running!!!
turns out it was the circuit opening relay, pulled it out and it was corroded pretty bad due to moisture, so went down to this guy i know who has got the same truck for parts, grabbed a perfect condition relay for 10 bucks! (toyota charges $100 for this bad boy)
dropped her in, gave the truck a couple cranks and she fired right up.
now ive got a perfect condition fuel pump sitting around and a pretty loud exhaust leak and a rear window motor to fix,
thanks for the help guys really appreciate it!
