fuel pump
is there a check valve in the fuel system between the fuel tank and the carb? i have an 86 toyota 22r and if you let it sit for a few days all the gas either drains out or evaporates because the only way to start the truck once it has been sitting is to give it a shot of ether or trickle gas into the carb. once it starts it runs fine all day until i shut it off for a day or so.

The mechanical fuel pump has one, but it usually won't pump gas to the carb when it goes bad. See if it's leaking down into the intake (with the engine off) from the carb itself. Might need a carb rebuild if it is.

Now that I think about it, I don't think it's possible for the fuel to back up into the fuel tank. It would have to defy gravity in the float bowl. So most likely it's an internal leak in the carb, dripping down into the intake manifold. Get a rebuilt or a rebuild kit and do it yourself, it's not the easiest carb to rebuild so take your time and write down the jet numbers and placement of them as you take it apart.
