Fuel Pulsation Dampner-warning and fix

Noticed a smell of gas under the hood for quite awhile now and finally found out what was leaking.

Under the throttle body is the fuel pulsation dampner, it has a plastic cap on it. There is a diaphram inside the metal body that can rupture and leak gas past the screw that is in the end. When I took the plastic cap off of mine the screw actually few out on its own.

The local auto store wanted $70.00 for a chinese made one and Toyota was well over $100.00; I went to the local auto salvage (Ecology auto) and found one off of a 96 Tercel with the 22RE. Although the Tercel dampner is about 1 inch too long it otherwise is the same and it only cost $3.25. I purchansed a 14mmx1.50 Die from the local tool mart for $10.00 and threaded the dampner like the original and cut it to size.

Found out that on the Mazda's this is a notorious problem and usually leads to the car burning down. On the toyotas there doesnt seem to be that great of risk as the exhaust is on the other side of the motor.

Yet another thing for me to worry about on my 84 EFI. That's why I bought a new genuine Toyota pulsation damper last year and keep in the glove box "just in case" or "when the time comes" .........which is probably sooner than I think.........
