Fuel level sender part number clarification

Usually I am pretty darn good at getting part numbers. But this one alludes me.

I need a replacement for my fuel level gauge. Yes I have searched, but not too many threads on this.

Here is my dilemma.

I have an 87 pickup single cab 22r (not 22re etc etc) short bed 4X4 STD not DLX not sr5.

When entering my vin number on toyodiy I come up with frame RN61 even though the vin shows RN63

Also when I called the dealership they gave me a part number 83320-39516

But looking on their site I also found this under 1987 yota pickup: 83320-39805 Fuel gauge sending unit, pick-up, 4wd, w/o turbo, w/o sr5

Entering the vin number in TOYODIY I come up with this: 83320‑39516 RN61..STD; FUEL TANK:65LITER

Now for the confusing part: when searching the dealerships parts for both part numbers I come up with this:

Part Number: 83320-39805 Electrical - Chassis electrical - Senders - Fuel gauge sending unit Fuel gauge sending unit, pick-up, 4wd, w/o turbo, w/o sr5 1987 - 1988

Part Number: 83320-39516 Electrical - Chassis electrical - Senders - Fuel gauge sending unit Fuel gauge sending unit, pick-up, 4wd, w/o turbo, w/o sr5 1986

Notice the 83320-39516 now shows as a 1986 and the 83320-39805 shows as 1987-1988.

Can anyone help me sort this out? I am thinking if I figure out what size gas tank I have I will figure it out. But......

Thanks all you part guru's.

Dunno what part number is the one you're after, but I do have a kinda related story. We had to replace the fuel sending unit in our 43-year old Massey Ferguson MF304 Backhoe this past week. The original unit that came out was very different from the "modern equivalent" part we got from an approved MF parts supplier (their system insisted on this specific unit for our backhoe). We switched them out and while the new unit works, when the tank is full, it reads 3/4ths on the gauge. Not a major problem, E is still E with the new unit and the fuel gauge works now, that's really all that matters. Just goes to show you, that even if the people who make the thing say one part should work, it might not work perfectly, and I think in a road vehicle that I'd be pretty peeved if a full tank didn't show up as a full tank.

I'd suggest ordering one, if it doesn't match the one you have (float-travel/resistance-wise, as it's unlikely the unit will be the exact same as the original), send it back and order the other.

That's the problem, it's a special order part (a $90-125 one at that) and it's not returnable.

If I am gonna pay that much money on an OEM part, it's gonna be the right one.

After researching this a little bit it looks as though two Fuel tanks were put in the trucks. A 17 Gallon one and a 19 Gallon one.

Looks as though by looking at the "notes" that the 83320‑39516 is for the 17 Gallon so that makes the other one for the 19 Gallon one?

I forget right now which frame code comes with the 17 and 19 gallon tanks. But, I think I might have the 17 Gallon one?

I would say go fill the tank and you might find out, but 19 gallons at $3 that's a $60 issue to solve, I know its not "wasted" money, but wow! Not sure if you could "guesstimate" how much you have in the tank and fill it to half? Then again, I'm not sure if that is 17 gal and 1 more in the hose? or how that works. Sorry, wish I could be more help.

I agree that if you knew what size tank you had you could narrow it down.

I am pretty sure it's the 17 gal. but you can always fit more into a tank than it's rating so there is no way to really tell for sure, without really looking at both or a clarification on which frame codes had what tanks. still searching for confirmation on that.

Here's what the EPC says:

83320-39516, GAGE ASSY, FUEL SENDER
198508-198808, RN61..STD FUEL TANK:65LITER

83320-39805, GAGE ASSY, FUEL SENDER
198608-198708, RN66..STD

That doesn't look too helpful, unless the manufacture dates or the '65 liter' clue help out.

this is from a toyota paint code reference website http://www.toyotareference.com/truck:

Truck 4WD 2.4L Reg Cab 84-88
84-85 Chassis Code: RN60
86-88 Chassis Code: RN61
N/A Engine Code: 22R / 22R-EC (EFI)
Turbo Engine Code: 22R-TE (86-87)

Truck 4WD 2.4L Xtracab 84-88
84-85 Chassis Code: RN65
86-88 Chassis Code: RN66
N/A Engine Code: 22R / 22R-EC (EFI)
Turbo Engine Code: 22R-TE (86-87)

Probably could have searched on here to find this but it looks like the RN61 is the 86-88 reg cab and the RN66 is the 86-88 Xtra Cab. So I am assuming the reg cab trucks have the 17 gal tank and the xtra cabs had the 19 gal tank.

Confirming I have the 17 Gal tank which is the

83320-39516, GAGE ASSY, FUEL SENDER
198508-198808, RN61..STD FUEL TANK:65LITER
