I have about had it! (1995 Toyota Pickup v6... SAS'd)

My brakes are not working properly!
Was pulling hard left and not stopping "on a dime"

I have replaced both front calipers, new pads, bled the brakes as recommended on here... at least 5 different times.
Checked rear drum brakes, replaced back right cylinder, it was leaking. Other side looked good and both rear pads as well as drums have plenty of life left.

The only thing I have not changed is the master cylinder... COULD IT BE?????

I am hoping but at this point I am getting close to using the barney rubble method!!

At one point I thought it was air but I am not getting any air from any of the brakes or lpsv. Pedal doesn't go all the way to the floor but it dang sure doesn't stop the truck when I stand on it.

Any thoughts?

currently 31X10.50's on 8 inch wheels.

could it be your brake booster ?

 

You do have your rear shoes adjusted up and use your emergency brake to keep them adjusted up.

Just which brand brake pads and shoes are you using? Did you measure your rotors ??

Did you measure your drums??

Then the size tires you have make a big difference .

What are your real stopping distances and at what speed ??

Then just what are you comparing the stopping distance with and brake performance with.

 

make sure your drums are properly adjusted. I had the same problem and thats what was wrong. If when you work the brakes with the truck off, you can hear the shoes pressing against the drum, they are probably out of adjustment.

 

Back brakes are good-to-go! The comparison i would use in explaining my braking situation is this:
below 10mph I stop. Over 20-30 mph, stay out of my way... I will eventually stop but it's not gonna happen immediately... several feet. Therefore, I start stopping and slowing in acceleration large distances of feet (30-50ft) before hand.

Sounds about normal to me.

Then I very seldom drive without 500 to 1000 pounds of cargo.

When I was learning to drive about 40 years ago I was taught to put a raw egg in a spoon attached to the dash.

Break one egg I sure learned to be smooth starting and stopping .

 

What happens when you pump the brake peddle once (while driving) and then press the brake peddle to stop? If it's spongy on the first pump you may also want to check your front wheel bearing for play. If they are loose the rotor will push your calipers out and cause a spongy peddle.

 

LSPV good ?

 

Is it still pulling to one side (you said "was")? Then most likely you have one front brake applying and the other not. I had this happen (on a different truck) and found the rubber line completely blocked (as in: I couldn't push the caliper in far enough to replace the pad).

Even with new pads you should be able to see the difference on the rotors. If necessary, scribble on the rotors with a magic-marker; one braking should scrub it off. If not, there's your bad brake. Do it on both sides of the rotor; you could also have a bent guide pin so that the pad is (sorta) applying on one side only.

 

New Hoses...did not help. Still pulls left and braking ability hasn't increased.

Tie rods are good, I haven't checked my bearings but i assume they are good... I will add this to the list of possibilities.

I would think the bearings would be good considerring I did the SAS less than a year or so ago. Maybe not... but I would think.

Pedal is a bit spongy, both front rotors are grabbing, LSPV seems to bleed efficiently, drums have been adjusted.

The only thing I can think of ... on the brakes... is to change master cylinders. I still don't know why it would be pulling left when ...

might want to check the steel lines to make sure one has not been damaged and restricting fluid causing the other side to pull.

 

Are the pads applying on BOTH sides of the rotor? A bent guide pin could keep the caliper from sliding, giving you only "half" of the brake. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...8-4wds1212.pdf

 

I had this problem too and it was actually wheel bearings. They were destroyed
