My 91 22re std cab short box 4x4, has always locked fixed hubs, and im wondering what the heck toyota was thinking when going ahead with it? My truck is coming up on 400K km, and my right front cv shaft and knucle are toast, because the previous owner never greased the thing. The knucle has no bering, just a brass sleave, and its worn right out. i am replacing it. So anyways is it just me or does fixed hubs sound realy dumb, because ur hole front end is turning all the time (cv, diff) and wearing away. I am switching to manual hubs for sure, but does anybody have any reason why fixed hubs are good, besides the fact u dont have to get out and lock ur hubs in? O and my friend has a nissan with auto hubs, that lock in when u put in 4x4 but run free in 2wd, are these good or not? Thanks.

 

What I find weird is the fact you have a 22re std cab with add..
Makes me think the PO swapped out the old manual hubs..
Most 4 cyl's of that era came with mani hubs.


And your not the only one who thinks ADD(automatic disconecting differential) is dumb, when you lift and make the cv angles greater is severly reduces the life of the CV's..

Yah i dont know why my truck came or has fixed hubs but i deff going to change to manual. just need to buy some new ones or find some off another yota. o and off topic i noticed u have a 2.7, how do u like it?

 

Fixed hubs are shift-on-the-fly. None of the lazy @$$es now want to stop & get out to engage their hubs....

 

yah i know some ppl these days dont wanna lock in there hubs, so they go with fixed hubs, but its so dumb. and if anyone know anything about nissans auto hubs that would be awseome.

 

I'd much rather have to get out and lock the hubs than to chance CV's every 50k miles but that's just me

 

I would NOT recommend auto hubs. The earlier P/U's and 4Runners that came with the factory auto hubs were horrible. If you weren't in 4wd and got stuck, you couldn't get the hubs engaged because the front wheels had to be moving to lock them in. Also, a lot of the time you would have to back up a LONG way to get them to disengage after you went back to 2wd. Just go to Aisin manual hubs. Then you can use your low range in 2wd when you want extra grunt but don't need 4wd. There are plenty of people on here who have used manual hubs for sale, including me.

Not all 4 cyls came with manual hubs. There was something related to the particular tranny that was in the 90 models, whether a G series or a W series that determined if ADD or manual hubs. Don't remember the specifics or years but I remember reading it when looking for a G series tranny for a friend recently.

I got Aisin manual hubs.

 

I had to get out and lock my hubs today in a couple feet of water. I thought I was going to be fine with just the locked rear, but the water was up further than it has been and my rear kept sliding farther into the water. I'd still rather get out and get wet locking my hubs than have auto or ADD . If I were smarter I'd lock them BEFORE hitting the dirt and there wouldn't be a problem.

 

He's not talking about auto hubs, He's talking about ADD..
Auto hubs were only on Solid axles.

 

G58 tranny in my 1990 4Runner 22RE with ADD. Pretty sure W trannies got manual hubs. I personally think ADD with manual hubs is a killer combo- lock the hubs all winter, unlock them in the summer on road.

 

 

Scuba, auto hubs were offered on trucks from 1984-1988, and on 4Runners from 1984-1989. The last year of the straight axle was '85.

 

I see "ADD" all the time and have no clue what it stands for. I know I should know but what does it mean? Im not a noob, but to that I am.

and to answer the "fixed hubs WHY?" question.... it's because people are lazy. same reason the automatic transmission, power windows, etc came about. laziness.
