ADD- Automatic Disconnecting Differential- the left side axle disconnects from the drivetrain so that the diff can freewheel and not spin the prop shaft and t-case innards. Saves on wear and tear and MPGs. It is vacuum-activated when the t-case shift lever goes into 4wd.
I think ADD is a good system. It seems to mostly fail on trucks where 4wd wasn't used much. Its also great for reducing wear on the t-case and rest of the drivetrain when in 2wd with the hubs locked (as a lot of people do in the winter). With the hubs locked, you effectively have a stock ADD system as the ADD flange ("ADD fixed hub") is effectively a permanently locked hub.
Manual hubs allow me to get 2wd low and reduce wear on the CV boots. BUT, it would be a pain to go lock in the hubs every time I needed them in the winter.

im with matt16 i love the add manual setup.. i saved one set of manual hubs form the 2 4runners i sold for my hilux surf.. gonna also give it that classic toyota touch!!!!

yah im going to find some used manual hubs, cuz i just had to replace a knuckle on the right, and new CV's both sides, because the cv's have never stoped spinning through 400,000 km's. uhh

ya forsure . im buying new tires tomorrow, 31" Cepek's, does anyone know what a good price on them are? i got $210 a tire and all installed and ballanced, it came to $1100 canadian. o and on black steel its 1400, rightnow im on factory aloys.

I love the ADD option here in Canada. Put on some manuals and you have lots of flexability. In the winter leave the manuals locked all the time and shift on the fly for the snow. In the summer unlock the hubs for less ware on the CV,s. Perfect.

yah im deff going manual hubs, and love how u can unlock the hubs and put it in 2wd low if u need to tow something out or whatever.

I dont know the actual name or what they are called but u cant unlock the hubs and they are always locked in, turning ur drivline always. Its just a fixed hub fith a plastic cover, like all sr5 toyotas have them and alot of 4runners do to stock. i will try to get a pic

I had the Auto's on my '89 Runner, and they sucked, I swapped them out for manuals 2 weeks after I got the thing.
Nissan automatics are the same crap. As was mentioned you need to move the wheel to get them to Lock, but if you are stuck in snow or sand, or on a wet slippery launch ramp, they do you no good because you can't move the front wheels enough to lock them in.
Nissan ditched them too and came out with an ADD type of system also.
