I just picked up some of these to do this mod to my 88 pickup but I am a little stuck on the best way to mount the mirrors. Did you drill new holes and use a backing plate or is there an easier solution I am missing?

Where? What?
If mounting holes of new mirror do not line up with those of original, then, yes, you need to drill new holes.
