Just curious just where you commute to and what time of day..
As long as your not on I 78 or I 476 for extended periods of time it would not be all that bad.
Having had to drive just a few times with my 87 4runner 22rec 5 speed on I 78
Not near enough horse power or top end to keep up with 80mph traffic.
Any where else t was not to bad.
It would be great to drive from Topton to Deka

I drive my 86 every day. Have it for a little over a year. I bought a major lemon and have succeeded in making it a very reliable, fun and practical daily driver and weekend excursion vehicle.
I will say that it rides like a truck. I have bilsteins on all 4 corners, poly bushings everywhere and new OME rear springs. I get bounced around a lot around town. On the highway the ride is like butter. Going over a railroad track in the city (usually a small bump in any other car) can chip your tooth in my ride.
PM me if you want to chat further.

I just have to be in the mental state that it's not the latest greatest, but it gets the job done and I'd rather put miles on a low maintenance easy to work on truck than rack up the miles on the ....... (newer car)

Sell the subby! I got rid of my old outback and got a 1st gen. The outback had all the goofy high-end crap; heated seats, moon roofs, cruise, power everything. It also had a perpetual oil leak, a tranny that shifted like dogsiht, and worn out cvs. I hated working on it because everything was so tightly crammed in the bay. About my first 5 cars were all old volvo wagons. I always appreciated how easy everything was to take apart. Huge amount of engine clearance in there. The 4Runner is just like that too (if you get a 22RE, which you definitely should). Maintaining it is easy, no hard access, parts available new and used all over the place. Since toyota made virtually the same truck for a decade there are a lot of different aftermarket kits and mods.
I don't drive everyday because I bike to work. My drive is short but I would still be fine it were longer.
Possible negatives for having it your only ride:
-2 doors is annoying if you drive a lot of people around. I always say that I don't care about how hard it is to get into the back seat cuz I never ride back there!
-Make sure the rear power window works and works well. No power window = no trunk. And with the 2 doors getting to the back SUCKS.
-Top on or off? It doesn't rain much out here so I think I can deal with leaving the top off for extended periods. I'm going to try and work up a easy throw-on tarp for when I get caught off guard.
Best part about my truck? IT'S PAID OFF.

For that kind of drive you could put up with it.
I would guess up to 222 to 78 and that would not be all that bad only a few miles on I 78
You have to watch those upstate NY trucks the salt up there can be rough..
The liquid brine is brutal on the bottom of all the vehicles.
Have you ever driven one of these before??
You really should before you make a final decision .
If you drive a 3.4 no way would you want to go back to a 22rec engine. for a DD

I DD'd my 1987 4-runner until this past June. I have been driving this generation Toyota since they were new. Great daily drivers. Mine has PS, PB and AC. I never use the AC, though, I have tube doors and they come off as soon as it gets nice out. The only reason I have stopped driving it is because of REALLY bad rust...

Sure new cars are nice and all, but id rather put that 300 to 500 payment into an older runner and make it like new. Plus insurance rates are awesome for our trucks

It is really only a call the driver can make .
So many different things enter into a call like this.
It is easy to say it would work good but where one lives makes a big difference .
As to gas mileage it seems about the same no matter what I drive .
Around here I drive 70 mph and that is in the slow lane I never pass anything .
