Ok, finally got a fire exstinguisher for the 4runner and I'm trying to figure out the best place to put it. I'm not a fan of drilling into the plastic side panels or into my seats.

So, if anyone could give me some ideas...maybe tell me/post up a picture of how you've got yours set up that'd help out my desicion making greatly.

mounted to the wheel hump in the cargo area using small sheet metal screws ?

 

A lot of people mount them to their Husky liners with Quick Fist clamps. That is how I would do it. If you wanted, you could even reinforce it with some sheet metal or the like on the underside to prevent the bolts from pulling through the liner.

I am getting ready to do this to my rear liner in my '07 Tacoma. I just need to find the sheet metal and cut it to size.

Not sure if 1st or 2nd gen 4Runner, but I mount mine on the roll bar along with my HiLift jack:



One thing you might consider for a 2nd gen is to replace some of the plastic trim push pins with bolts. I did this on my 1st gen with some of the pins that hold the trim to the upper bed rail. Using a nut inside and a fender washer on the outside you can get a might mounting point. I put eye bolts in mine and use them for ratchet straps to hold gear down. There is one such eye bolt just above the deck light in the picture above.

 

Clever idea.

 

I did the 1st gen roll bar mod and it works real well for mounting the fire extinguisher. The roll bar was $35 bucks and cutting a 1/4" off each leg and re welding it back together it fits fine. Only takes a couple hours and well worth it in the end.

 

On my 1st gen, I used the holes inside the fiberglass topper that a grab handle would normally screw into. I don't have a large extinguisher, but it's enough to put out a decent size fire. Anyway, I cut a strip of 1" wide alum. strip....about 1/8" thick...with some larger holes drilled into it, and then fastened it to the grab handle location. Then, I fastened the extinguisher mount to that. It's a convenient spot, up and out of the way of any loads I may have in the cargo bay that would possibly interfere with being able to reach it quickly. Open the window and I can grab it down in seconds.

I want to go the route oharleyman went and put one of those 1st gen rollbars. Always good to have a fire extinguisher too! Good thinking. I carry one on my transmission hump on the passenger side.

 

The rollbar mod is a sweet and extremely rare mod (to those not on YT) - do a search for "4x4Fink Highlander" and you can see the one I had in my '99.

Not only will it add to the overall look/coolness factor but it will definitely allow for a ton of mounting options for all kinds of stuff - something I wish I had more of in my Tacoma.

I have a second gen, how much work would it be to fit that first gen rollbar in? I'm assuming I'd have to mount it like Fink did in his old 3rd gen.

Also, where would I go about finding one of those rollbars for $35?

 

any junkyard .. i got mine for free just had to pick it up...

 

I had a rollbar in mine and took it out....it took up waaaaaay too much room in the cargo area! I couldnt even fit my camping gear in there....

However you mount it make sure that it is VERY secure......in a rollover the thing becomes a projectile and could easily hurt someone

 

Luke at Fourtreks offers a lot of options.

 

Mine is screwed onto the pass. side of the tranny hump. Its easy to grap jumping out in a hurry. You guys mounting them in the back and such, ya it may look cool there but whats the use of it if you have climb back in to the vehicle in an awkward position to grab it or open the back? The most critical time of an engine or vehicle fire is at its growth stage before it becomes to big to handle. Just a thought

 

Mounted in the back won't take that much more time but I won't argue that the faster you can get it out the better. The problem with mounting in the front is you can only mount those tiny extinguishers that don't do a hell of a lot of good unless the fire is very small to start with.

Very valid point, personally i would like to keep the fire extinguisher that i have now that is maybe 13" by 5" in diameter (very rough estimate) mounted on the transmission hump, and another bigger one or two on the rollbar mod when i do that

Now i have had to deal with the damage of a fire. I wasn't there at the time, but luckily the insurance place my parents pulled in front of ran out with two extinguishers in a heartbeat once they saw the flames!! Not going to go into details now, but all i can say is be prepared! If those fire extinguishers where not there when they were then i would have no truck! Moral of the story, listen when wcorbett says its most crucial in the first stages.

Along with the fire extinguisher i also always carry a first aid kit, along with other supplies! Always!
