finally installing a tranny cooler this weekend

ive searched and found tons of info on this site.my trans temp light came on briefly twice and my fluid doesnt look the greatest.it does not really smell burnt but is not bright red.i want to flush it all out the way youve described by breaking the return line and filling it as it drains.ive also learned thet there really is no filter just a course wire screen and magnets.do you think i would be fine to not remove the pan?or is it really necessary to do with a flush and fill.i would definately do it if there was a normal type filter.

ummm... just a hint, having a thread title announcing something you're doing this weekend doesn't lend itself to letting people know that you're actually looking for an answer to a question.

There's no need to pull the pan for a flush & fill - the "flush" part of that will get the tranny fluid out of the torque converter and all. You're right in that there is no real "filter" in teh tranny, but there is a screen and a magnet in the pan that's there to collect metal shavings. Depending on how many miles it's been since the last time that screen and magnet were cleaned, the pan _should_ be dropped, but it's not 100% have-to necessary.

Make SURE your fluid is at the proper level -- not too full or too low. I accidentally overfilled mine once when I first got it and it overheated on a day that was not too warm. It was only about 70 degrees outside. I took out enough fluid to get it down the the 'full hot' mark and it has never happened since. Oh,,I was doing mostly highway driving, not stop and go.

Right. But be careful, it's MESSY to do. There's no easy way not to spill tranny fluid all over. Some folks have luck with loosening all the bolts, pulling all but the corners, then dipping one corner more than the others and draining that way.

Also, be sure you have enough tranny fluid on hand to refill... You're gonna need about 12-15 quarts by the time you're done with the drain and then the flush.

Yeup, most do... The problem is that it's not sitting in a spot that it'll let you drain all the fluid out of the pan. Believe me... have some rags handy, and a big catch pan. You WILL spill fluid.
