I replaced the rear main seal on my '89 4runner with the 22re and unfortunately the auto, i was wondering how to fill the torque converter, it lost alot of fluid when i removed the tranny. if i just fill the tranny through the stick will it also fill the torque converter? there is a hole on the tranny input with fluid dripping, but i just want to be sure.

It is best to fill the converter when off but filling through the dipstick will fill the converter. Do it while it is running so that the pump is running.

Typically, you would fill the converter with fluid before you install it. If you don't, it's not such a big deal but takes more time later and may be a little more difficult to purge air from it.
Like Flash319 said, filling through the dipstick will fill the converter- ATF is heavier than air so when you add ATF it will be slung outwards (centrepetal force) and cause air to move inwards.
It may take a while so don't get discouraged.

But don't think it will be fixed the first time you do it. Check the fluid level several times... even over a few weeks of driving.

alright, thanks. its still got quite a bit of fluid left in it so i guess itll be ok.

depending on the trans and how much was drained... it can take over 11 quarts of fluid.
