fill plug stuck

I know this is in may threads but I've been looking for a specific part which I haven't found. I can't get that thing of for nothing. So is it possible to fill it up through the breather plug? I only took the actuator for 4wd off. So I don't think that all of the oil would have come out. How much oil do they take? I have a 1992 4runner 4wd. If someone could let me know if this works and how much oil you figure it would need now that would be awesome!
Thanks

Ok. Got out the impact gun and tried for about 1/2 hour. Still nothing. Not budging at all. How can I get oil into the breather hole? Anyone done that?

PB Blast, Wait, Impact, Repeat......
Or you can rent or borrow a torque multiplier

I used a breaker bar and a hammer to get mine to turn after a few PB treatments.

Anyone know how much oil goes into the front diff? I might just try and get the drain plug out then empty it and fill er back up through the breather if I can't get the fill plug off tomorrow morning..

I think it's close to a half gallon if I remember right.

tru to get the filler out - doing the breather will take a long time I'd imagine.

+1 on breaker bar...and if you have a torch, you could heat the area AROUND the bolt to expand it (not ON the bolt - keep that cool as possible), and then try try try again....

Whatever you do, don't take the drain plug out first, I hear that only leads to heartache.

Torching might work but really, a breaker bar and a BFH should do the job even without the WD or PB.

Ok. There is no way that thing is coming off. Sprayed it with wd40 and some other stuff that was recommended to me. Now It's somewhat stripped off.... I'm gonna see how it goes to fill it through the breather, then empty it if i can get the drain plug out. then put in 2 quarts. Thanks for the help. I don't really want to stick a torch on it because it's got gas and oil all over it since I had a leak in my pan and fuel line....

They have PB Blaster at Cambodian Tire. Have you heated up fill plug with a propane torch, sometimes the expansion/contraction does the trick. Ideally you'd be heating around the bolt to loosen the hole, but simply heating the bolt might crack what ever rust is preventing you from undoing it. Filling the diff through the breather would give you no indication of how full the diff is. Furthermore, it would be quite difficult to not spill all the oil while attempting.

Don't ever open up the drain before you open the filler, if you can't get it open, it limits your ability to drive it to the shop to get a new bolt head welded on.

Also last resport, pick up a new filler plug, and a tap for that size... then weld a long peice of angle iron to the stuck one (but only ong enough that it can be turned all the way around), add a cheater pole to the end, and if it doesn't come off... it's time to just tap a new filler hole any way.....

ATF and acetone 50/50 mix spray on and wait, do it again and give it a try.

On the stripped W56 tranny fill plug, Had to use a air chisel
Air chisel might work

I took the drain plug out... comes out no problem, wish it was the same with the fill plug. But I just drained what was in it and put back in just under 2 quarts. Seems to be working fine... I hope. I'm gonna be re gearing pretty soon anyways, gonna swap out the 3rd member and get a new one so I'm not that worried about this one. Another suggestion that was made to me was to take the cover off of it and work on it with the cover off the truck. makes some sense to me, I may just do that next time I have to do this. Thanks for the help.
